Eat your own dog food

Whitney by Whitney Talking Back(May 2006) (rank 97th)

For those of you not in the business world, this expression, “Eat your own dogfood” means that you should be willing to use the product you’re selling. You know, like “I’m not just the President of the Hair Club for Men… I’m also a member.”

Or in this case: Take your own advice.

My friend Heather and I frequently call one another after work and say “What is there to do this afternoon?” What?! We, the authors of hundreds of activities for moms and babies, cannot ourselves think of something to do today?

Even though I know  the Zoo is awesome, I’m often too lazy to pack up the diaper bag, or too fearful that traffic is going to stick me in a small space with a whining toddler for longer than I can handle. But I need to get over my fears, and get on with my dog-food-eating.

Do you find that you’re such a genius giving other people care, compassion, and good advice but not so good at taking it? Try doing an activity you may have found yourself recommending to someone else.

I have always maintained that if I am gonna be a good leader and delegate, then I should be prepared to do what I have asked someone else to do.  This has once or twice gotten me into trouble as I like to prove this point, and tend to choose the worst instances to do this.  But it pays off.  It adds credibility to what we say and share.
Peace

Agreed
Some people are better at giving. :) I must admit that I can be like that too... :) Not in a mean way, but more of a suggestion then I find myself wondering why I never did it in the first place....

I'm guilty

That is such a great post Whitney. You're so right. I know that I often have great ideas and solutions for other people but overlook my own "wisdom" sometimes.

What I really find interesting is that I often write the advice I need to hear the most. I have gotten much better about listening to my own words but am still a work in progress.

Love that you're here at Minti.

Yep

My wife would be very quick to point out that I don't follow my own advice.
