homemade christmas gifts for the grandparents

mommyofWHA by mommyofWHA Speaking(November 2006) (rank 343rd)
My kids love doing crafts and their grandparents love collecting them so I thought why not combine the 2 and make up some keepsake christmas gifts. Something simple, but definately a treasure non the less!

I went to the local dollar store and picked up
3 different colours of paints (I have 3 kids, lol each needed their own colour ) along with 12 art canvasses on frames, (basically a wooden frame with painters canvas stretched over it). When we got home I gave each of the kids their own colour of choice, and a canvas frame and allowed the 2 older ones to go wild putting hand prints all over them, while the baby I put her little feet in the paint and put foot prints all over hers. We then let them dry and then I used a permanent marker to put their name and date on each canvas. My husband then attached eye hooks to the tops and bottoms of the frames, so on our oldest ones he put 2 eye hooks on the bottom, our middle child 2 eye hooks on top and 2 on bottom and our youngest 2 eye hooks on the top. Then he took a very thin wire and attached all the pictures together oldest first, middle child, then the youngest, from top to bottom and then attached picture hooks to the back of the top one so that they can be wall mounted.  If this is confusing sorry, I will gladly draw a picture and post it to explain this .

My kids loved doing these and I know the grandparents will cherish them for years to come!!! So inexpensive, but I really think homemade kids gifts beat out any store bought gift I could ever buy for them!!

Re: homemade christmas gifts for the grandparents

We did the same thing for my grandmother, but will all 6 of the grandchildren.   They each painted their own canvas.  My cousin mailed me her children's (they live 6 hours from us) and then I screwed all 6 of them together to make an abstract painting grouping...

Re: homemade christmas gifts for the grandparents

I have done the same thing. I am a foster parent and got a frame and on a peice of paper i did the kids hand prints on it.  I also purchased a christmas top or something christmassy. I put that on the child and took some pics. Went down to the local photo shop and had the best one printed of. which i put in the frame along with the print of there hands. I also put there name and year it was done. The natural parents loved it.

I lurve this!!!
This sounds right up my street!  I might talk to my brother about doing this with our children combined next year when their baby is old enough to do this too.  What a bee-autiful idea.
