Children with Bruises

lexiw by lexiw Young Parent(November 2006) (rank 15th)

HI everyone,

I have looked on this site for any advice on Idiopathic Thrombcytapeanic Purpura and could not find anything. With ITP the bone marrow does not produce enough platlets so the blood does not clot like it should which can cause bruises and bleeding. I have not met

another parent who has a child with ITP but if there is anyone out there who does have a child with ITP then I have started a new group for parents with children who have  ITP. I found it very hard to make my child go through all the blood tests and the bone marrow test. I think my daughter, Brielle, handled it all better than I did. I think it would be good if I could show Brielle that there are other children like her but it is hard when there just are not any that we have been able to meet. If there any body who would like to know more please ask me and I will help where I can.

Re: Children with Bruises

Very helpful advice, so sorry Brielle had to go through all those painful tests, how horrible for a child.

My thoughts & love are with her.

Love Janice

Re: Children with Bruises
Hugs sweety. I feel for you. I had my MIL talk to me about Factor 7 deficiency as Chris's Older Brother has it and what they had to go through to get it diagnosed. They even had wealfare on their back as Andy was covered in Bruises. Thankfully none of the others have it but they are all carryers and none of the grandkids have shown  up with it so far (fingers crossed)

Good luck with the search of other mum with this.

Liz

ITP

hi ,   I took my daughter back to the hospital again yesterday to take more blood from her, and still no change  her plate count is still really low, no change at all, they told me to get checked again in 3months and if still no change i need to sit down with a team of doctors and decide what to do, they have suggested the treatment of steroids which have major side affects ( weight gain facial structure changing hungry all the time etc etc) and im not liking that idea at all, if there is any other parent whos child has been treated for ITP can u please write to me and give me some advice on this, thank-you

Question
I'm actually looking for info on this.  Did your daughter bruise all over or just in a specific area.  Rachel has unexplained bruises on the lower part of her legs.  I'm starting to think she's allergic to something.  We did simple blood work already, but we're going back to the doc tomorrow.

Question- bruising
Hi , most of hayleys bruising is on her legs , she also gets them on her back to, the unexplained ones anyway, any kind of bump thats she has she bruises straight away! I really believe everyone should get there kids bruises out, it could be a number of things or it could be nothing at all, but its best to be on the safe side, hope all goes well at the Doc's!

Bone marrow test
I got this test when I was around 13 years old because I had an undiagnosed illness.  I feel for your daughter.  What a painful test!!!  She must be really, really brave.  Good luck finding a support group here on Minti with others who have shared your experiences.

i feel very strongly about this subject lexiw last year my son was diagnosed with Idiopathic Thrombcytapeanic Purpura it took my local hospital, a bone marrow test and gosh a week to give a diognosis luckily for reilly he got the all clear in april but it doesnt mean it wont come back. I'm new to this site and i think all parents should know about ITP. well done for bringing this to their attentions lexiw

Dear Reillysmummy,

You are the first parent I have been able to talk to about ITP. My Daughters diagnosis took about a week too. My local GP thought it might have been lukemia at first but she sent us to a peadeatrician who diagnosed the ITP. Any questions you have please ask Brielle is now 8 years old so we have been living with this for a while now hopefully I can be of some help. I have also started a group if you wanted to join (or already have.)

Must be hard
It must feel like you are dealing with this alone. Have you looked into support groups for ITP?  Kids are amazingly tough when faced with these sort of unfair and cruel diseases/disorders. Does she have to take medication or have other treatment. I hope you find the support you need. Best wishes.

Must be hard
Yes it has been hard at times but at the moment she is doing well and she is not on medication at the moment. Brielle did take Prednisilone at one stage because we had no other way of building up her platelet levels.

so sorry and "bump"

I am so sorry for you and your little brave Brielle ... I am sorry I have no advice or experience with this ... I just wanted to comment and to vote to keep this article going so it will not get lost in the archives and maybe if we keep it going  there will be others who can offer advice and support .... Best of wishes and blessings, Lisa

A "bump" is when we try to keep the article going so it will not get lost in the archives ... so a hopeful "bump" to you ...
