Keep your Internet Public
Set up your internet connected computers so they they are in public, high traffic areas so you can see where they  are going.
Fun free antispyware utilities such as Adaware and look at the cookies that are saved on your computer.
If you find some dodgy ones (with xxx or sextracker etc in their descriptions) ask your child if they know where they came from and then explain where you think they would have come from.
Let them know you are aware of where the computer goes without having to install internet monitoring software to spy on them.

Great advice!
Although bare in mind that some unwanted ads can pop up (even with pop up stoppers) and may not have intentionally been accessed or even accessed at all by you r kids.
I know of one site at least, that I use regularly, that has those popup sexy ads and other stuff.... I can't stop it, although I run 2 completely different anti spyware, popup blocker, and adblock programmes!
Some times there is no avoiding it... so if they say they didn't use the site.. they may not be lying.

The one thing I rarely tell my kids to turn down is the PC speakers... I always have some idea (even when I am not over their shoulder) what they are doing on the PC and what they are playing. As I limit their "screen time" I doubt whether they would waste much time looking at stuff that wasn't fun... and noisy!

Speakers
Great backup idea.  I do the same with E when she is on her CBeebies.  At least I know when she deviates into the main BBC site because the silly voices stop!  Usually it is accompanied by a wail as she tries to navigate back to where she was.  LOL
Peace
