How to get your labor started -- home remedies and natural ideas

RookieMomHeather by RookieMomHeather Walking(May 2006) (rank 348th)
If your baby is fully-baked and you want to help nature take its course, there are some home remedies for kicking labor into gear that folks are talking about.*

I’m not telling you which of these I tried with Holden-to-be, but I will say that last year we were gunning awfully hard for a 05/05/05 birthdate:

  • Sex - what got ‘em in will get ‘em out
  • Nipple stimulation - trust me, whatever you do is nothing compared to nursing a real baby
  • Spicy food - Ruen Pair’s medium spicy makes my head sweat! (Berkeley, CA)
  • Ride on a tractor - my grandma said it worked for her
  • Jumping jacks - as recommended by my own doctor
  • Pizza - eating a fully loaded Prego Pizza at Skipolini’s in Walnut Creek, CA
  • Castor oil omelette - blech
  • Long walks - up hills or on the beach is even better
  • Chocolate - I believe my mom recommended a full pound in one sitting
  • Aggressive pedicure where they hit all the acupressure hotspots

I will also say that once labor really started and we got our precious baby home, I wondered why I was in such a hurry… does anyone else have any unusual labor-inducing ideas?

* I'm no doctor, so call your doc about your own situation if any of these ideas thrill and concern you.

I don't know how true it is, but apparently semen actually "ripens" the cervix ready for opening during the birth. I don't know how that would work, but it's an interesting theory.

Rich food
It was a big old bowl of pasta with a rich cream sauce that got things going for us. Some friends of our went to the same restaurant a few weeks later and had exactly the same result. Something about rich food that gets things moving.

Walking!
When my due date came and went (my neighbour who was 2 weeks less pregnant than me actually had her daughter on MY due date, talk about frustrating!!) and I was just so anxious to not be pregnant anymore and to meet my baby girl, I went online searching for a way to get labour started. I tried the castor oil thing, but it was just so bloody gross that I couldn't do it. I read that walking helped. So for 2 whole days, I recruited anyone who would put up with a miserable, waddling 200 lb pregant lady to walk with me. I went into labour that Monday! I cant say that the walking was what did it, but at least it gave me something to do while waiting other than being impatient!

i may have to use this

I'll only start to consider home remedies for inducing labor after 40 weeks although I'm hoping to go anytime after the 38th week. I've heard the castor oil working for a lot of ladies--I think with a lot of these remedies your body has to be ready to go and you just give it an extra push to get things going.

I agree with one point - what's the rush!

I remember with my first that I wasn't particularly uncomfortable, but all my friends from parenting group were having their babies, and so I wanted to get to see mine, too. My advice now is - wait as long as possible! Once they turn up, there's no sticking them back in when you want a decent night's sleep again! You may feel that you weren't sleeping that well before, but getting up to pee is nothing like having a small child chomping on your soft bits...

To add to the list, when you really can't stand it any more, fresh pineapple is supposed to be a good one.

My trick was walking for 3 hours st an exhibition. My son came out the next morning on his due date. He was in a hurry 2.5 hr labor.
