Baby cereal

Tritch by Tritch Talking(November 2006) (rank 158th)

hi everyone,

We are having a problem introducing baby cereal to Lyliana.  She is 51/2 months now and she is showing all the signs of being ready to eat solid foods.she sits on her own, she watches us when we eat and tried to get our food,

she is very interested in it, but she wont eat her food.  She will open her mouth for the spoon but when she tastes it she spits it out.  then she refuses to open her mouth for more.  We tried twice about a week apart and she did the same thing both times.  Is it that she is not ready for food yet or is it that she doesn't like the cereal? We have only tried rice cereal because its the easiest to digest,  Should we try a different kind, like oatmeal, or should we wait a few weeks and try the rice cereal again for the third time?

Please help.    Cheers Darren

Maybe try waiting for a bit. With my daughter, we didn't start feeding her solids until she was about 6 or 7 months old. (rice cereal) All the health care professionals i spoke with told me that babies usually can't digest that kind of thing until they are older, even if it seems they are ready, their little tummies can't handle it. Which would explain why she only has one bite and then won't eat any more. Oatmeal is definitely not easily digested, so you might want to wait until she is between 9 and 12 months for that. I know from experience with the oat meal....wait as long as you can or it will make her sick. (it did with my daughter).

I give my four and a half month old farax baby rice (the plain one and the baana and pear one i alternate for variety) I also give her bana custard... and mashed potato mixed with her formula... And pureed apple... and other such things... she loves it... she sleep better between 10-12 hours a night... She is always happy and full of energy during the day and i take her for check ups regulary and there is nothing wrong with her...

Fruit

My daughter has never had any baby cereal.

She only had pureed fruit and veg, and I have never had problems with her only wanting sweet things just because her first foods were fruits.

Feeding solids
My son  really wanted solid foods early and he would never eat rice cereal he hated it but he did eat pureed apple in very small amounts at first and other custards and fruits that are not recommended until the child is six months now but I never had any problems feeding him anything other than the rice cereal. I agree about the oatmeal though maybe try some weetbix with breast or formula milk.

First tastes

First tastes are just that.  It is a different texture, sunstance and flavour to what she is used to.

When we started E eating it was cuz she was wanting it.  She was trying to eat our food, and more often than not she ate our food rather than baby food jars.  I always had baby jars handy though for the days when we were moving around visiting people - it was easy and the lids go back on - it was smaller to transport than my own tupperware containers.  Of course we only gave her mash/puree veges at first, but soon we were intorducing loads of things.

Relax and enjoy the experience.
Peace

DO not put fruit with the cereal

One thing is NOT to put fruit in the cereal... Like Izzy said in the comment for this Q & A they will get used to eating some sweet and will not eat anything unless its sweet..

I have this problem.. But thankfully she is eating her veggies, slowly but she takes a few bites and thats it!!

differnt kind
Try a differnt brand name. I used to mix baby food like peaches or what evr to the cereal to give it some flavor.  I think I wrote about what type of fruit and veggies they can have at what age so go check it out.  I hope you figure out soemthing.
