Smoking while pregnant

Tritch by Tritch Talking(November 2006) (rank 413th)
just wondering how may mums out there smoke while they were pregnant. or gave up was it hard to give up. imi having some trouble.

I smoked while i was pregnant with my daughter, i wanted to quit so bad...i lowered myself down to 2 cigarettes a day and
by then it was almost time to have her. The day she was born,(i had 2 cigs that day) i had to have an emergency c-section. The epidural they gave me didn't fully take so they had to put me out to finish having her. The doctors told me that when they put me out--i had an asthma attack and popped a huge hole in my lung...i had to be rushed to a hospital 2 hours away by S.T.A.R.S. air-ambulance, where i woke up three days later. Needless to say i haven't smoked since. Yes it was extremely hard to even get down to 2 cigs a day...i was a hard-core smoker before, but God eventually heard my prayers to quit, and helped me out the hard way!!!

smoking while pregnant

I quit smoking about a month before I got pregnant with my second baby.  I did not quit with my first.  It was very difficult to quit but I am so glad I did!  I feel so much better, although i get peeved when people say how horrible smoking is for the baby blah, blah blah.  I have a perfectly healthy 6 year old daughter and I know a whole lot of people who smoked when they were pregnant, and all had healthy babies.

I definately think it is better to quit, BUT, if you choose to smoke when pregnant it isn't the end of the world!

Smoking while pregnant
I know how hard it is to quit smoking and I smoked during 2 pregnancies and into about a month of my third, but I managed to quit, and have been near on a full time non smoker since, I have had a couple of smokes but I felt so crook after having them I'm really sure that I wont ever be a smoker again.  When I gave up I was working and I just changed my routine and stopped having smoko with smokers, this was the only way or I don't think I would have done it.  My husband was also a smoker and we quit at the same time, we had also moved into a new house which we made smoke free and I didn't fancy sitting outside in winter smoking, I have found that I can sit in a room of smokers now and not have it affect me.  I think when you do it for yourself and not because you have to, you don't become a hypocrite and go on about filthy smokers etc...lol.  i have friends that quit smoking for religious reasons and they go on about smokers all the time (not that I'm putting Christians down).

Want to do it.
You have to REALLY want to give up or it will not work. I am a reformed smoker and I smoked through my pregnancies. It is not easy but the benifits are HUGE!

Quiting
When i first fell pregnant I cut down my smokes to one or two a day, I  was however unfortunate enough to miscarry that baby. I never smoked again after that. Although there was no direct link to me smoking and losing my baby it wasn't something i would risk again - I have since had a beautiful healthy boy.
I am a big supporter of non-smoking during pregnancy and around children,  however seek help if you need to - I was told that going cold turkey can take a bigger strain on your body than cutting down gradually.

Congratulations
E was born on no-smoking day in the UK!  They ran a competition for the first baby to be born to a mother who had quit for pregnancy.  It was a great idea. It takes a lot to stop.  So well done.
Peace
