Fun and Free (or practically free) things to do for Christmas

Kristen by Kristen Young Parent(November 2006) (rank 165th)
  • Take the Christmas light drive.  Everyone knows where to find the one neighborhood in the area where it seems that every single house tries to out-decorate the neighbors.  As a result, the electric bills are sky high but you can’t beat the light show.  Parking
at one end and allowing the kids to walk the block is a great family activity that won’t cost you a thing and will bring pleasure to your kids.  If the weather isn’t great (too hot down under and too cold up north) you might just want to make the walk a drive instead.  Crank up the Christmas carols on the radio and sing along.
  • Invite the neighborhood kids over to decorate cookies.  Whip up a batch of sugar or gingerbread cookies, cut out some fun shapes and then invite everyone over to decorate.  By asking everyone to bring decorations for the cookies, the costs are split among the crowd.  At the end of the evening, have a munch fest and let everyone enjoy the fruit of their hard work.
  • Have the kids make Christmas tags for the presents.  What person with kids doesn’t have construction paper, glue, glitter and paint laying around the house somewhere?  Set out all the art options and let your kids use their creativity to make homemade tags for those Christmas presents for the rest of the family.  Not only is Grandma getting that nice calendar you made for her for Christmas, she now has a keepsake art project that her grandson spent quality time creating.
  • Have a Christmas movie marathon.  Nothing will put you in the Christmas mode faster than watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”  Every year Derek and I watch “A Christmas Story” and I subject him to days of “YOU’LL SHO0T YOUR EYE OUT!!!”  Even in my 30’s I still get a kick out of the Mom/Safety messages of that movie.  I was sure that once I became a mom I would understand, but I don’t.  Always good for a laugh.

Just a few ideas that can make for a lighthearted, low stress and relatively inexpensive Christmas.  Feel free to add in the comments any more that come to your mind.   I’m sure that we can never have too many ideas for fun things to do.

Make paperchains - you can by kits of strips of paper that you just lick the end and stick together or like I do I buy a pad of coloured sugar paper and just use a glue stick, you can also add the offcuts of thewrapping paper after wrapping. We also collect pine cones and tie a piece of wire around the top, cover in PVA glue and dip into bowls of glitter they make great homemade tree decorations.

We too do the "light drive" and alot of the houses round our way decorate for charity and leave a donation bucket outside.

Free things at Christmas

DO the christmas lights already. Our neighbour does their whole house in lights and it looks brilliant, and we sometimes walk around or drive around the area to find other people's houses. they're wonderfull. the other ideas are good too.

Christmas Activities
The drives around town is something we do frequently. Downtown in the park, they have a huge christmas lights and displays that people come from all over to see. We go frequently down to the park to walk around. A great family activity!

great ideas!
this year we're adding a little feast of St. Nicklaus to the list.  our austrian neighbor nick told the kids that if they leave their winter boots outside on the night of the fifth, st. nick will come and leave a little present.  since we'll be traveling for christmas, we're going to decorate the tree together and put the boots out before bedtime in style.  doesn't cost us more than a handful of candy and the kids will be thrilled.

great ideas!
I have done that for years. My sons birthday is on the 5th and he always remembered to put out his shoe for St. Nick. He also knew, if there were sweets or so in the shoe, there would be presents on christmas day. When he was naughty he recieved rocks in it, which made him to be special good to recieve presents.  Now he's going to start that same tradition with his own family, his son is 3yrs old. My kids always loved it, and so did I. Merry Christmas!

But I don't like the neighbours kids.....ewwwwww you can have them at your place.........over half of them would try take whatever was not tied down....there are some good ones but it seems the bad outweigh the good some days...we have about 25 families in our street and I dont think 3 families associate with each other...so much for small country town spirit.....

Thaat sounds sad.  How about including school friends - or just doing it within your own family?  It is the kinda thing E and I just do because we can.  Last weekend Disney Cinemagic channel did a free broadcast weekend and it happened to be princess movies weekend, so we did princess day.

I only found out about it at 7am, but we made everything themed for the day, not food, but how it was eaten was like a banquet etc.  It is possible to downsize all these suggestions!

Peace
