Ideas for Organizing Toy Boxes

wildrose by wildrose Talking Back(November 2006) (rank 42nd)
A house with full of children toys sometime could give a little headache. Then we start buying some boxes to keep the toys away from all over the place. But sometimes our children need our help to find a special toy in like 5 different boxes, that also give you a little headache.

We know the word 'organise' and 'sort'. So, why don't we try to implement that words in our children's toys as well. Here are some ideas:

  1. Buy different color boxes; we could teach from very young to learn colors and sorting the type of toys (cars, soft toys, lego, wooden thomas tracks, mix toys, etc). If you wish to put the boxes under the bed, make sure you buy the boxes with the wheels. It will so much easier for little hand to pull them out and push in back again.
  2. Put pictured label on the box; this to help the young one who cannot read yet. By looking at the picture the child will learn which type of toys will go to each box according to the picture.
  3. Put named label on the box; this to help the early reader also to learn to read and understand to sort the type of toys according to the name on the box
You can either combine all the ideas above together (specially for little ones), or if the child is reading already he/she probably just want to have named label. See what he/she prefers which idea they like.

Of course this idea will take time for little ones to learn. But like other activities part of learning to grow up, routine and guidance/supervision from parents are the great deal for them.

Apart from organizing toys, those can be used for sorting other type of things in the house. Happy Trying....and Organizing.

I do this
I have plastic containers with lids. Each plastic container has a photo of whats in the box stuck on the lid, and also the word stuck on their too. Like the container with the toy cars has a picture of the cars all spread out on the floor and CARS written on a big piece of paper on the lid. Teaches them whats where and also the word.

Great idea
Fantastc advice. I have been dreading cleaning my daughters room up, but I have found this advice very helpful. My daughter is 7yrs old with Down Syndrome and attends school in a special needs class. She has a lack of communication skills (doesn't speak clearly)  but knows her colours and can recognise most sight words, so this should be very helpful to her.

Thanks. Wheels are good for those boxes. cause when the box get heavy, wheels help little hand to move the box easily (specially when the room use carpet).

toy storage
Cool idea......Roller boxes work well
Then you can take them to one room or another easily.
We have solved part of the toy dilema.
They are only allowed one toy box each now for the older two....
What doesn't fit is gone.
We have a pop up duck and pig toyboxes....
Jalan has her wooden toy box and 1 yellow duck in her room
We have a pink ping i the lounge room
Apart from the stuffed toys in her toy hammock and her gigantic sesame street characters
which don't fit in the toy box...There are 3 and they are each 75 cms tall

Puzzles is good to keep in its own box, but if the box gone, or  never come with the box, we keep it in zip lock bag ( for the puzzle pieces) and named the bag. Then put all those puzzles board and the bags together in the same box. And for Books, we put them organized on the book shelf. I organized based on size and series.

Toy Boxes
I also use the plastic clear shoe boxes so my son can see what is inside.  They are also a really nice size for stacking on a bookshelf.

Boxes of Toys
thank you. I found this sorting also good when you put the toys away. Let say one day you want to put the boxes away (with lid) and on other day your child want to find his/her toys, you could easily find it based on what type of the toys and the name on the box.

Simple and Easy
Great idea and so easy to do.  We do something similar and it does make life very easy when tidy-up time arrives.
Peace
