The meal from home versus the school canteen.

SwanbourneCooks by SwanbourneCooks Walking(February 2006) (rank 439th)
In today's school canteen, can we rely upon nourishing food being the choice offfered to the children and more to the matter will the school child willingly purchase that food offfered or will the canteen be seen by the school as a money maker and offer food less than suitable?

Does the lunch box from home still exist and will today's child accept what is offered from the family home in preference to that of the school canteen?

An article printed in the West Australian newspaper (Thursday February 9, 2006) alerted me to the possibility of providing nourishing niche food for the lunch box.

Suggestions such as Egg, Bacon and Zucchini Pies; Square Sushi; Pumpkin Loaf; Chicken Meat Loaf in Muffin Tins; Cheese and Vegemite Pull Apart; Corn Cakes with Salsa and Caramel Oat Bars were music to my ears. With recipe such as these and the added advantage of lunch boxes that retain coolnes/freshness children should look forward to opening their lunch box. I believe many more ideas for providing nourishing, appealing lunches are needed.

Re: The meal from home versus the school canteen.
Vegetable lasagne is a good one to use.  It can be eaten cold which means you don't have to worry about a cooked lunch being given unheated.  It doesn't contain meat which means there is no need to worry about meat being left unrefrigerated.  We have these when we go out on day trips places.  I don't need to pack lunches just yet except those times we are out for the day then I will.  Good article.  Also the school I have chosen doesn't have a canteen.  They have a full cooked meal with meat and veg, they also cater to vegetarian children and children with allergies.  It's fantastic.  We will only have to worry about morning tea and afternoon tea which will be easy enough, fruit, yoghurt, sandwiches, boiled egg, custard.  They have a fridge in every room, so these things will be able to be given to her each day.  It would be nice if all schools did this.  Never heard of sqare sushi before

Lunch Box
We currently pack one lunch a week.  There are no guidelines per se provided for parents, and I don't have a clue what the other children get in their lunches.

E has a fruit portion snack bag available from the dried fruit aisle in many supermarkets, they are the equivalent of one of our five a day.  They mean she does not have bruised fruit rolling around in her lunch box and often I cannot fit a piece of fresh fruit in her lunch bag either!  Along with a sandwich and a drink.  It is exactly what she has at home - well we use fresh fruit there - but you get my point.  She enjoys it and I rarely have anything come home with her.

I would love to have more ideas for what to give in her lunch, I think I may experiment with some pasta salads in the next few weeks....
Peace

Recipes
I would love to see some links to or suggestions for those recipes you list... Agree with the concern about school meals very much - refer also to the great series by Jamie Oliver on this in the UK
