SIDS monitors

pagan-mum-of-three by pagan-mum-of-three Talking Back(November 2006) (rank 207th)

I'm a firm believer in these wonderful inventions. Yes, they cost a lot of money, but what's worth more? Your child right!

I bought a under mattress monitor when I was pregnant with my 2nd daughter. It cost me $250.oo from eBay, & the best money I EVER spent.

I was always so paranoid about SIDS, it was something I knew I wouldn't be able to handle. I never had any problems with my daughter sleeping & all was well with her. Then our son was born, & again used this monitor with him. I believe it saved his life.

But wait, I'm getting ahead of myself. I'll explain how it works. The one I have is 2 pads that slide under the mattress of the cot (Or bassinette) You can use one or two at the same time. One for younger babes, two when they start to move around. It is connected to a little box that clips onto the side of the cot. Whenever there is no breathing movement for 30 seconds, an alarm SCREAMS at you so you can check your child.

When Jacob was 5 months old, about 10 oclock one night the alarm went off - In I raced, to check on him, and he was laying still where I'd put him 3 hours earlier. Smack bank in the middle of his bed. Why was the alarm going off?? I turned it off, (Still makes me cry a year and a half later) and flicked on the light. He was laying there so still, when I picked him up, he was all 'floppy' and didn't move. His little head rolled across my arm so slowly & I lent toward him to check his breathing, & jiggled him a little. Then he took a huge breath, rolled his head to look at me, did a little smile, then went back to sleep. I didn't put him back to bed that night. I stayed up all night on the lounge holding him in my arms - Freaking out about what had just happened. What HAD just happened. Did he stop breathing - The monitor said so... He took in a huge breath of air when I jiggled him a little bit to rouse him, what had just happened?

I took him to the doctors the next day, & she said he was fine. Nothing wrong with him. When I asked about what had happened, she said we'll never know. I just thank the Goddess very much for whatever help she gave me on that night.... I firmly believe that monitor saved his life. If I didn't have it - I dread to think.....

I know that this dreadful thing happens to some families, & you do get over it. (You don't forget - But you learn to deal with it) I think if I hadn't spent that money & bought one of these monitors, WE would be one of those families.

The good thing, is you can now buy these monitors in Target for $110.oo. That's very affordable for anyone.

They work.

Re: SIDS monitors
Mate, I didn't see this when I searched before I wrote mine.  How super scary, I am so glad that you caught him in time!  Thanks so much for setting up the link, and best wishes to you and your wee man.

A solution to SIDS

I have never heard of anything like this & like every other parent I too would get up in the middle of the night to check on him, I remember one night I woke up to check on him I felt his cheek and it was cold really cold, so I put my ear down to hear his breathing when I could'nt I placed my hand on his chest to feel it movinng still nothing so as I picked him up he started crying which gave me such pleasure that I started crying with him. He slept with me that night well he slept!

We will defenetly be investing in one in the near future thanks

thanks - you have got me thinking
Oh boy - just when I thought we had what we need you have got me thinking. But how to convince hubby?
I just showed him your article and he asked me if I am going to be a paranoid mum. I said 'yes'! And I will sleep better with one of these.
I haven't convinced him yet but will keep trying!

Hi there, the instructions provided say to perform CPR if your baby isn't breathing. I guess I was lucky that I 'reminded' him to breathe by the little jiggle I gave him - Like a 'Hello there Jakey, what are you doing' I have been a member of St John Ambulance Volunteers for several years, (My whole family were at some stage - Mum, Sister & both brothers) So I would've known what to do anyway. Having said that, I probably would've been a wreck while doing it...

All the SIDS information we are given now, suggests that yes, smoking is a risk factor. But I and my 3 siblings all grew up in a house where both Mum & Dad smoked. None of us ever showed any signs of anything being wrong. Although both my sister & I grew up to smoke ourselves... We have a non-smoking house here. We go outside! My husband & I don't like the idea of anyone smoking around our kids. Lots of people do - I'm not judging - But kids can't say, 'Mummy that's going in my face'

And yes, asthma appears to run in families. My husband has it & we think our youngest girl may have a mild dose of it. She coughs a lot after running around, & if I've had the windows open during the day, it gets a bit dusty, she coughs then too. I must get her checked.....

I hope that's answered a few questions.

Monitor
I have not heard of these monitors but that is good news for your son you got one. I have heard that SIDS is when a baby is sound asleep and for some reason does not take the next breath what are you meant to do?? jiggle them? performe CPR? I would have liked more info on SIDS. I smoke and have heard smoking in the house is bad and causes SIDS is this true my son has never stopped breathing, he has no respitory problems at all not even asthma. If asthma is in the family tree is a baby more likely to suffer from SIDS?

I never knew
I really wish I had of known about this divice not just for me but for my friend who lost her baby to sids at ten weeks old. when I had my son I was so terrified of it happening to him that for the first twelve months I did not sleep much at all having to get up and check his breathing all the time  ( His cot right beside my bed) it would have been so much easier having one of these. Thank you. I will now make sure all mums to be know about this device

Excellent advice

Excellent advice.. I heard about those, but I don't think you can buy them here in Canada. That is an amazing story and that your son is fine now. I don't know what I would of done if I heard that alarm going off. I hope he's ok for you now and hope that it hasnt happened since then.

My mother in laws friend bought one of those but never ever told me where to get them.. I think I will look into it, just to be on the safe side. Thank you very much for posting this, well done on your first advice :)
