slow talkers

babyann03 by babyann03 Walking(December 2006) (rank 500+)

i don't know if many parents out there have children who are slow to start talking or not.....  My youngest daughter Baileigh has been very slow to start talking, she says a few things now, and has always attempted to get her msg accross in other ways though.  Her

childcare teachers, told me they were having trouble understanding her & could i take her to see a speech therepist to help out??  so we took her to see someone from cams.

We went every friday, took both the girls, and they both improved greatly!!!!!!  Alicia didn't really need much help.  Anyway, the speech therepist was trying to find ways that would make it easier for baileigh to get what she wants accross to us and anyone else.  So she taught bai some sign language, which we encouraged at home, and she told the kindy also.....  just a few signs, like for finish and things like that......  she improved quite a bit, and we havn't been for a while, but she still isn't talking much still, i know they all develop differently, but i just want to help her along a bit more.  I know that the childcare teachers often sit with her, and show her different pics of things and try to get her to say what they are....by showing the pic, asking her, then they say what it is, and ask her again what it is.....  I think it works well....

Now she always loves to sing nursery rhymes, and she does reasonably well with ones like twinkle twinkle, baa baa black sheep, and 3 little ducks  they are the main ones she can sing....  and when she feels like talking, she can come out with quite a few words i think.....

But i do suggest going to see a speech therepist if you are worried about your childs speech.....ours is very good, Baileigh and i are going by ourselves on thurs, as if alicia goes, she kinda dominates, and Baileigh doesn't get to answer much without Alicia butting in 1st....lol   When Alicia came along, the therepist, ended up showing/teaching her to write in lowercase...as Alicia knew how to write, but only in capitols....now Alicia is excelent at writting, and she signs her friends names in as well as her own when she gets to pre school.... and has to sit in bed and write and draw everynight before she goes to sleep!!!!!  I am so proud of her.

Speech

Every child is different in when they talk. Speech therapy is great, as that is what my daughter is going thru at the moment. If you have any concerns about your child / ren, then see the appropriate person, like you have, and good on you for doing something about it. Excellent

communication
It sounds like you have a great speech therapist that communicates well with you and with Baileigh's school as well.  That is so great because it sounds like you can only have positive results by having such a great working experience.  Good luck to you.

Speech
Children develope in their own way and time my son is very active and more phisical that a talker I think I should take him to a speech therapist he can hardly communicate at all. With added effort on my part like pointing and saying what it is he will be talking in no time hopefully

Talking
Hi!  I have a friend in the same boat and one of the things I noticed is that she doesn't talk to him as much as we do (not that I'm suggesting you're the same).  She commented on it one day and I explained that right from when I was pregnant I have always talked and sung to my babies - while we are walking, shopping, driving etc...  I just always explain what we are doing and point things out to them.  It is important too to make sure you have a bit of time one on one every day - without TV etc... in the background.  Have a conversation and if they make noises or movements you return or copy them.  This has always worked for us.

yes i am the same with both my girls.....  and Alicia the eldest girl, started talking early, and has always been independent, whereas Baileigh is total opposite, slow talker, but it could have something to do with her having epilepsy, i don't know.....  she's a slow walker cos of the epilepsy also....  She is only just turned 3yrs, so i am sure when she starts saying a lot more things we will be wishing she wasn't at times lol  just like we do with Alicia as she doesn't stop talking even in her sleep....lol

take care, will you be my friend??
