Amusing children on car rides

Practical-Princess by Practical-Princess Talking Back(December 2006) (rank 67th)
Coming up to holidays here we all dread car trips with kids. Here's some ways to keep them amused:

* For especially long trips, print out maps so the kids can mark off each town they drive through. If there are any sort of land marks such as tourist attractions for them to look out for. Plan where you might stop for lunch and have that marked, too.

* Caravans - a game where you have to spot as many caravans as you can on the road. The first person to say 'caravan' when one is seen gets the point. Kids spend so much time watching for caravans that the trip passes quickly.

* Have fun thinking of names that the letters on number plates could stand for.

* Pick a topic - animals, countries, towns, food, etc - the first person thinks of something in the topic, then the next has to take the last letter of the word and think of another. eg, if you use animals, and someone says 'cow'  the next animal must begin with 'w'.

* Have a 'scavenger' hunt. Now, I don't mean they actually collect the items as such, they just have to find them. Make a list of things to look for and the kids tick off each item as they see it. Things like: a train, a motorbike, a plant with red flowers, a church, a McDonalds sign, a service station, etc, etc.

* The internet has plenty of sites where you can find the words to songs. Print some out for the kids to sing. Coming up to xmas, print out some xmas carols.

....That's a few ideas, anyway. Have a great holiday!

Variation on a caravan theme
In the UK there is a game people play and it involves pointing out post boxes, phone booths and red or yellow cars.  I think it also involves a point system.  Have heard kids play it heaps - really oughts check out the rules one of these days.....
Peace

Love the map idea.
we also like to point out the colors of cars (since we have a toddler and he isn't quite advanced enough to play those other games).

If living in Australia, my mother would shut us up by saying how many Koala's can you find.

LOL I can't remember.. But you know it works with tourists as well.. LOL

I was taking a road trip back home with a bunch of Quebec fellows who were using my house as a half way house (back when I was living in Australia) and they just would not shut up, they  kept nagging at me "Are we there yet, Are we there yet," Of course they were just having fun, when I passed one of those Koala next so many Km signs.. I told them to look out for them....

And they did, the only draw back was each time they saw one they made me stop the car so they could take a photo... LOL

lol... you did it wrong, though. With tourists, you tell them we have 'drop bears' - bears that drop on you from the trees! It's amazing how many people are guillible enough to believe you, tourist or not! lol!

LOL my father told them that story.. But what cracked me up was he told them they to stop them from latching onto you is you stick a ton of gel in your hair... OH my now that was funny!  We were taking them out bush one day and would you believe two of them actually did the gel thing.. I don't think I  ever laughed that hard.... LOL
