Aussie Aussie Aussie

How patriotic are we? Although not an avid sports watcher, I’ve got to say I loved a bit of Commonwealth Games action. The grandiose Opening Ceremony, the athletes all so proud and the competition. Oh how I love
the competition.
I am an adrenalin junkie, though not through me actively participating, but as an avid (and extremely vocal) viewer. All the cheering, yelling and the rush of excitement at a possible win. Love it.
The Z Man (my toddler) and I had been jumping up and down shouting at the TV for days. I’m sure we were just one swim race away from eviction. This particular sporting extravaganza was even more special, because we had a family friend to cheer on. He ended up walking away with the gold and our feet have hardly touched the ground since. Insert a Steve Irwin type “Woo Hoo!” here.
I love that I am instilling a sense of patriotism in my small boy. We bounced up and down on the couch when Makybe Diva won her third Melbourne Cup, we oohed and ahed when Mary Donaldson married her Danish Prince and we are both proud to call the Wiggles Australia’s own. Z has even taken to calling out “Aussie Aussie Aussie” in supermarkets and is quite perplexed when not answered with the reciprocal “Oi Oi Oi”.
Maybe it’s a mother thing, maybe it’s a single parent thing, or maybe it is just because I am proud of our sunburnt country, but I reckon that a little Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi every now and then is a good thing. I am the self appointed authority on all things Australian to my son. We are big fans of Vegemite, sing along loudly and badly to ‘Land Down Under’, visit the Koalas and Kangaroos at Australia Zoo with alarming frequency and wear our nationality like a much loved comfy old pair of jeans (worn but rarely removed).
We have joined the team that made “Crikey” a part of everyday English language and although the Commonwealth Games have left us, we have a host of adrenalin fuelled events to look forward to. “Advance Australia Fair”, or “Go you good thing”, whatever your vernacular show a little Aussie pride today.
