5 Wonderful Waiting Games: Things to do when stuck with an unexpected wait

Kristen by Kristen Young Parent(December 2006) (rank 165th)
Here are some great ideas that my sister Pache passed along about things she does to survive a long line or unexpected wait with her 6 1/2 year old and her 4 year old.  I thought they were fantastic .
  • Declare thumb fun.   "1,2,3,4 I
declare thumb fun!"  Put your hands in a shake position and hold on after you shake hands with your child.  The object is to try to pin your opponents thumb down for 3 seconds and you are the winner!
  •  I spy.  I spy with my little eye something _______? (pick an object that is specific color) everyone guesses until the object is discovered.
  • Hand-palm slap game.  Face your opponent and place your hands (facing down) on his palms (facing up).  The person on the bottom tries to flip his hands around to slap the top his opponent hands.
  • Knock-knock jokes.  When in doubt, humor is the way to go. Kid-created knock-knock jokes never make sense and always draw laughs. Pache likes to tell one to get the ball rollin' and it always seems appropriate.  "Knock, knock. Who's there?  Jamaica.  Jamaica who?  Jamaica me CRAZY."  This one is sure to get belly laughs all around.
  • I wish.  Sometimes all you need is your imagination and best wish to make it through the reality of a very long wait.  "I wish we were in a boat out at sea and I was drinking a fruity drink with a straw in it" is a great way for a mom or dad to start.  Let the kids continue-the wilder, the better.
These were great ideas and I can't wait til Ethan is just a little older and can appreciate them.  Hope you can get a couple of laughs out of them yourself.  We have to do whatever it takes to survive those long waits that life seems to hand us.  Special thanks to Pache for passing these along to me.

love these
i'd add to the "i wish" game this twist--i wish this car was a magic carpet so we wouldn't have to wait in traffic--your turn.  each kid gets a chance to wish for a faster mode of transportation.
