Remembering relatives

Practical-Princess by Practical-Princess Talking Back(December 2006) (rank 326th)
I have a niece I don't see very often (see her in some school holidays) as she and her mum & dad live a couple of hours away. She's now 2 1/2 so is developing a better memory of me and my kids, but in the past when we've visited it
would take her a while to warm up to me as she did not remember me. My sister-in-law found a good way to help her daughter remember people and I think it's a brilliant idea.

On her daughter's bedroom door, at her eye-level, my sister-in-law stuck photos of family members. My niece can look at pictures of her Aunties, Uncles, cousins, Grandparents, etc, anytime, and her mum reminds her of who they are. When my brother and sister-in-law know that I will be visiting, they make sure they point the kids and I out to their daughter so she knows who to expect. This helps my niece get excited about her visitors!

Such a simple idea that I wish I had thought of when my kids were young!

Remembering relatives
We print out extra photo's of family when we visit interstate and we stick them up in Miss Cheeky Chops' room.
She loves telling me stories of things that she's done while on holidays and she quite often rings them on her (toy) phone and updates them.
If it wasn't for the photos I don't think she would use them for pretend play and memory.

We do this

Also each time we get new ones sent via email we open them together and guess who is in them...she is getting real good at identifying people, and it keeps alive those memories of when she did meet people 2 years ago now.

Mum and Dad have same at their place - pics of all the family around the house - it is like a treasure hunt.
Peace

remembering relatives

friends of mine did something similar with their son, they made a littel book with relatives pictures and their names under it, he took it everywhere with him.

Remember the rellos....

The magic of web cams are a fantastic thing.. I know not everyone can have one, but if you have family so far away, and the internet I swear it is one of the best investments I ever made, not just for the kids to see my family, but for me... Homesickness is not a pleasent thing and well sometimes you just need to see them in real time....

Also for my son I have cut out photos of my folks, and stuck magnets on the back.. You can buy magnetic pads that have a sticky back and you stick the photo on it then cut it as you want... I have photos of my family stuck to inside of the front door, I have no idea why the door is magnetic it just is.. LOL  But my son is always pulling Nana and grandpapa off the front door and putting them back on!!!

I am hoping that my mum downloads skype so that we can chat for extended times. If she doesn't get it, we will have to resort to the photos. Our place good use them anyway.

Thankyou
My mum  just moved this weekend two states away. I was concerned about  my three year old boy forgetting what she looks like but this will certainly be a huge help.
