Cell Phones while Driving (revised 2 times)

HOTMAMA by HOTMAMA Talking Back(December 2006) (rank 58th)

I know we are all guilty of doing this at one time or another.  I became an advocate so to speak about 3 years ago I watched a story about a mom who was visiting her sister.  The weather turned foul, so rather than be caught in the storm

she packed her children ages 2 and 5 into her jeep and headed the 2 miles to home.  As she drove home her jeep was struck on the passenger side by another car.  The man driving was distracted by dialing his cell phone.  Her daughter age 2 was buckled in her car seat, on that side.  The woman pulled her daughter out of the car and she was not breathing, mom was crying and screaming BREATH BABY!! Her beautifull little girl took one deep shuddering breath, and died.  The man who struck her car had a good driving record, and was not sighted, not even for killing a child because of his negligent driving!  I did not even know this woman and child and I cried.  I think the injustice of the entire situation is hard to swallow!  I just ask that you think twice before you answer that cell while driving.  Alot of states have made it illegal to talk on a cell while driving unless you use a hands free device.  There have been studies on this, and people while using hands free devices have slower reaction times and "tunnel vision" .  If it is not important don't answer.  If you think it is important enough to answer pull over to a safe location to take the call.  Make sure it is a safe location for you and oncoming traffic.  You never know someone talking on their cell phone may hit you.

Ok, I had to come back and something else.  Yesterday after I posted this I was driving in Turlock, a city near where I live.  I am in the turning lane, there are two of them, and the woman next to me is on her phone!  I guess she didnt read this!  lol, any how as the light turns green she is trying to light a cigarette with the other hand while her left hand is still holding her cell.  And how in the heck do you tutn a car while both hands are occupied!

The last thing I just realized yeseterday,  my brother in law calls me often from work because he is a truck driver, and he will stay on the phone for an hour or more.  It hit me like a ton of bricks!  I am half of the cause!  Even though I am at home, safely talking on the phone, he ISN'T!  So now I dont tak to people if they are in the car either.  Funny how you do things and then one day  you realize how stupid it is!

As of July 1 2008, California drivers can no longer use cell phones while driving, UNLESS you have a hands free device.

I totally agree with you!! Using a cell phone while driving should be banned and those who do it should be penalized everywhere. Children's safety should be always put first

Re: Cell Phones while Driving

I believe In Australia driving school instructors are allowed to talk on the phone while teaching a student to drive as long as they don't use hands free or a headset. I have started an answering service for them so they could set a better example but it hasn't really taken off as yet.

cell phones
I totally agree that cell phones should be outlawed while driving. I have seen many close calls especially at our many four way stops. People too busy gabbing to know who's turn it was to proceed or even going straight through without stopping.

I see that all the time also!  I recently saw a sign at the  store that said "Hang up and Drive"  so I know that I am not alone in my annoyance at this

It's against the law here also.
Here in Australia, it is against the law to talk on the mobile whilst driving, unless it's handsfree. Even handsfree is full of distractions.

I have the blue tooth headset and only use that when I'm on long trips, but then again I rarely get calls on my cell phone. I will try and pull over when/if I get a call.

This story is such a chilling reminder, that we need to be more careful in our actions on and off the road.
Thanks for posting it.

I have been looking for the original story, I have not come across it yet, when I do I will post it.  The mother is trying to pass laws and is an advocate now obviously!

Driver distractions
When driving, not only do I refuse to answer my phone, but I will pull over and sit quietly until any passengers in the car that are distracting me have realized that we won't be going any further until they stop arguing, yelling, or whatever they are doing.  If I've got music or the radio playing and I'm finding it distracting I turn it off.  I pull over to change radio stations or cd's.  I will not smoke, eat, or drink (non-alcohol of course) while driving either.  If my nerves get rattled by something, I pull over and wait until I'm calm again before attempting to continue on - though that rarely happens as I have a weird tendancy to be incredibly calm on the road, and I actually find driving quite relaxing.  If only I could stay that way the rest of the time!

Australia's really strict

Apart from the risks to life and limb in Australia the police come down on this really hard.  I know of people who have been fined for trying to turn a phone off that's ringing (rather than answering it).  It's just not worth it for so many reasons.

mobile phones
i agree and disagree, yes mobile phones do distract you while you are driving(even hands free) and can have major repercussions you and other drivers, but the car radio or CD player can also distract you to the same point if you are listening intently to the news and can also cause a problem but not as much as the mobile phones. In Australia it is also illegal and you get fined, but the people who have an accident lie about being on the phone because don't have the ability to face the consequences of their actions.

Further to my previous advice i have just heard more on the mobile phone issue.
You can be fined (in australia) for being pulled up on the side of the road with the car in park and the engine idling, while talking on the phone.
If you have the engine turned off then you cant be fined but that will depend on the police of the day.

Cell Phones
I totally agree with HOTMAMA. Cellphone use should not be allowed in cars. We have a lot of four way stops in our city and they are confusing enough to some people without having a cell phone to their ear. A woman at one of our more famous four ways, made a left when it wasn't her turn, causing a three car pile up. No one was hurt, thank God, but a little attention to the road and it wouldn't have happened. Ditch the cell phone and enjoy the ride without distraction.

That annoys me too.
If you are in a car and you don't have a hands free device Turn your phone off to avoid distraction. If it's important they will call back or you can return the call later. It's not worth ending someones precious life for a phone call.

Good Post

Good post....

I've seen some pretty strange things while driving, not from me though...other people..:)

Another thing that bugs me with some drivers is how low their seats are put back. So many teenagers drive with their seat so far laid back they are nearly laying down while driving...No one could possibly have total control of their car in that position. The other pet hate of mine is music in cars. How can anyone play their music so loudly that it has that 'boof boof' sound....you can't hear ambulances, other horns...nothing...

Its illegal
Where I live it is not only an offence to drive using a mobile, it is illegal to use one if the motor is running.  You have to pull off to the side of the road and turn the engine off. I turn the phone off if I am driving and am teaching my teenager to do the same. I generally dont have to drive more then an hour to get anywhere, so the phone calls can wait.  If I am expecting an important phone call, and am on a long drive, I will pull over regularly and check for messages - this also gives me a chance to stretch my legs and lose the long distance driving stare.

it's not just mobiles

Ok now I have tears for that mother and her little girl.that is something no one should ever have to live through. And the problem is that it is not just cell phones. With kids in the car there are also added distractions and we all need to learn just to tell the kids "not now honey I am driving". My sister-in-law was killed by a woman who sped straight through a stop sign because she was leaning back tending to her baby and plowed straight into the car.

We all have to remember when we are driving, JUST DRIVE, there is already enough things you have to do to do that safely for you and everyone else on the road.

So many distractions
It is difficult enough to get through traffic these days without getting distracted by the phone.  Thanks for reminding us about cell phone safety.

Phone and make up
Not only a driver while driving also using mobile phone at the same time....I hate seeing a woman doing her make up in the car too. I'm not sure whether they looking at the road properly or sometime they stop the traffic. Cause too busy doing her make up and her hair while the traffic light already change to green. I saw many people doing sms while they drove on the freeway too. Crazy stuff.

Phone and make up
Very good point!  Makes you wonder how they dont poke themselves in the eye!  I never do that either, when I was about 15 a woman was shot and killed in the town I lived in, the man who shot her said she had been putting on lipstick and flipped her hair and he didn't like it.  Waste of a life, thats for sure, but I dont think he should have taken her life.  Just made me afraid to even put on chapstick in the car!

Cell phones while driving...

It is amazing how many time my hubby and I have seen people swerving and we say wow they must have had a bit to drink look they are all over the road.. We finally get passed them to get out of any impending trouble only to find a multi tasking driver... I have seen people read while driving or even trying to take notes... It is amazing how stupid people can be sometimes...

My father has an unfortunate job where he is often called to road accidents that have been faital due to cell phones!!!

No Hands free here either!!!
About 11 years ago when analogue was still in and mobiles were huge!!!!! I had a car phone in my car. I used to drive and talk as my Job was pretty much on the go then. While talking on "hands free" and driving I actually ran a red light and caused a big accident. . I wrote off my car another car and did a fair bit of damage to another one plus the traffic lights were damaged as well. Luckily no one was injured from this accident. I do not even talk on hands free any more unless someone else is in the car with me. Please be aware that even hands free takes some of your concentration away while driving.

It is hard to ignore a ringing phone.
It is hard to ignore a ringing phone. Here in Western Australia they have just increased the penalties for talking on the phone while driving. It is hard to ignore a ringing phone, but I usually manage to get my passenger to answer it or to pull over or just ignore it.
I really hate it when I am running late or someone knows I will be on my way to a place and they ring me on my mobile. Logic tells them I must be driving - so why ring me at that moment???????
I try to avoid ringing friends on mobile if I think they might be driving!
I hate being in the car with my brother in law driving- not only does he talk on his mobile - he also texts while driving!!!!!!!

I use to all the time also, we live way out in the country, so its kinda boring driving to and from.  After I saw the story about that family, I no longer use the cell while driving.  I am just glad that I was able to reach someone with this warning. Thank you.

Good Advice

Here in Alberta if you are a first time driver(like myself) you are not allowed to use the cel phone, if you have to pull over and answer it or call someone. You can get a certain amount of dermits taken off your license.

I just think that it's great and hope it goes to everywhere else for all drivers and just not first time ones!

UK LAW
In the UK it is against the law to drive with a handset in your hands.  You are allowed to use hands free, but the penalty for driving while on the phone is astronomical.
Please always pull over if you dont have a head set to use.  If it is important to answer the call - even if just to say that you are driving and will call back in so many minutes when you reach your destination.
Peace
