Taking your toddler to the pools

ClayCook by ClayCook Minti Founder(February 2006) (rank 32nd)

Our toddler loves the water, and has become very confident. If he sees a pool he wants to run and jump straight in! He creates quite a scene, crying and struggling as we try get him into his swimming gear... with him using as much energy as he can muster to get out of our grip.

Now when we plan to go to the swimming pool or beach, we make sure we all change into our swimming gear (including our bub) before we leave. This way, as soon as we arrive our toddler can have the time of his life and be in the water ASAP.

Why does he love the water? Since he was a very early age we have involved him in "water babies" swimming classes. At about 6-8 months old he could hold his breath (happily) under water. If you are interested in this type of thing I highly recommend it, it is really great bonding time with your child, it is great for their confidence, it also has the added benefits of getting you both out of the house and gives you something to do each week :)

UPDATED: 31st May 2006.
Our toddler is now 21 months old (I think, either 20 or 21 months... gettinghard to count), anyway... our experience at taking him to the pools has settled down considerably. He now understands that we intend to go in soon, we just need to change into swimming gear first.

One useful technique apon exiting the pool is to first wrap your child up in his towel, make sure he is warm and dry and then sit him down near you and give him some biscuits or fruit to eat. They are especially hungry after swimming. This gives you a good  few minutes to dry yourself down, get changed into dry clothes, and prepare his stuff. Then simply dry your toddler off, put him in his dry clothes and you are both happy as larry (as some people say)!

I hope this helps with your swimming trips.

Codi is now an absolute fish. Admittedly we do have a pool at home now which he swims in at least 3 times a week, however I have no doubt that the lessons and the fact that we introduced swimming early has helped him gain confidence in the water. He is only 3.5yrs old now and can swim unaided etc. He loves it, and he even had about 1 yr out of the water when we were in the US last year.

Here is a quick video of water babies classes...

Re: Taking your toddler to the pools

I imagine there was a lot of crying and gagging and wiggling before getting to this stage.   Unless they do it at a very very young age? like a couple of months?  My son definitely didn't like lying down when we first took him to the pools at 6 months.

But that is just amazing though!

First time baby swim
At first day of my baby swim with my 17.5 months (at that time) daughter, she was so eager to go to the pool straight away (we were about 10 minutes early). But now she started to get the idea of waiting. Everytime we go to the baby swim, we both already in swim gear, to make both of us easy, and even she's young but I always tell her that she doesn't allow to scream to get in the water and have to wait nicely. Which she did. Thank god.

Taking your toddler to the pools
I was pushed as a child to go swimming, although I really love it and is my prefered choice of exercise.
Olivia on the other hand hates water. She is happy to play outside the wading pool and loves filling the dog bowl from her various buckets. Bath times are non existant and I usually shower her without putting her down. Grrrrr.
I really wish she would like the water as I would love to take her to swimming lessons.
Maybe one day........

A Snack.

Great idea about giving them something to snack on while you get dressed, I am definately going to try this next time we go.

My daughter is also 21 months old (and I so know that feeling of losing count of the months I had to sit and add them up when I was writing about my family.) She also loves the water and is very confident and even does a kind of doggy paddle the second you lay her on her front. we really must try to go more.

Junp in??
Am a bit owrried about kids running and jumping straight in to the water :) Perhaps a check if it is OK with the folks would be a good addition pre-leap.

Re: Junp in??
Since he is a toddler he can't swim on his own at the moment anyway, so we take him into the water, even though he tries to escape our clutches. However yes... once he can swim without any help from us... we will have to check the area first.
