Sun Protection - Sunblock Blues

CTmama by CTmama Speaking(May 2006) (rank 357th)
I am a messy mom, a disorganized, fly by the seat of my pants mom. So I'm rarely prepared. If you're one of those super organized moms who always have healthy snacks handy, this probably isn't needed. But if you're like me, keeping things orderly is near impossible. My advice will
usually come from the Messy Mom perspective.

Everyone knows how important it is to protect your kids from the sun. But in application, it's REALLY hard to follow through sometimes. I believe MOST of the problems are related to not having it handy. Seriously! It seems easy, right? But two cars, two kids, two strollers, some beach bags, diaper bags, bike bags...all of a sudden, everyone's lost the sunblock.

Suddenly, it is really hard to:
1) Remember to put it on in the first place.
2) Cover a squirming 20 month old when you're trying to get out the door.
3) Remember to reapply every two hours.
4) Cover a squirming 20 month old in public.

Lather, rinse, repeat all of this every day. I think the main problem lies in having easy access to the right stuff at the right time.

Here are some tios that could make it easier to protect your kids:

1) Keep sunblock everywhere. Buy bottles for your car, your diaper bag, by the front door, in the backyard, in the stroller, at the grandparents, etc. You're going to use it up anyway - you might as well have it everywhere. Then, when you go on an unscheduled outing to the aquarium, you don't have to worry about scrounging up some sunblock.
2) Buy some travel size bottles as well. Put those in your pockets, your diaper bag (I know, I said you should put a big bottle in there but that one got lost, I swear it did...), in your stroller bag, etc.
3) Get some extra light weight long sleeved shirts, wide brimmed hats, and pants that you can throw on in a pinch. They should be wearing this stuff anyway, but mine usually end up nakey somehow.

There  is one product which I have found helps with the squirming 20 month old problem. It's wipes covered in sunblock...It isn't the end all be-all. It helps with the in between applications but I wouldn't recommend using them for primary application OR regularly. They are pricey. BUT - they will get you through the squirming child syndrome. See the link below for the product itself.

Lastly, the pump spray bottles are no better than the regular kind. The spray comes out in a stream and it still requires you to rub it in.

So to wrap up, buy bottles in bulk, leave them everywhere, cover the kids up. Don't bother with pump bottles.

UPDATE: I have been testing the Continuous Spray that was released recently and can give it a hearty thumbs up. It is pricey but I used it on both my kids a few weekends ago and it worked wonders. I tried a few brands and Coppertone in the U.S. seemed to provide the most thorough coverage.

Wonderful sun care tips
Messy mum tips are the best!  even for those who may be organised i think there are days when 'mum brain' kicks in and sentences go half said, thoughts escape before they are processed and so on.  It is a side effect of being a mother apparently.  Thank you for this gem
Peace

sun-ezy lotion applicator!

HI there,

I just wanted to tell everyone about a brilliatn product I found - it's a refillable lotion applicator called sun-ezy. (I found it on the internet - www.sunezy.com.au).  it's got a handle wiht a sponge at the end and you fill it woth sunscreen!  It's so simple - wish I'd thought of it!!

adn they come in different colours - my 3 year old daughter loves the pink and purple one and all she wanted to do now is put on her sunscreen - bit of a difference from the wrestling we used to have to do to get her sun protection on!

anyway so the website I think is www.sunezy.com.au and I just HAD to tell everyone about this awesome product, it really has made a difference to my life!

enjoy the sunshine...!

Great Advice...
At just 8 months I find it hard to slather this stuff on my squirmy worm too..  Good idea about keeping it "everywhere".  I'm also going to buy that continuous spray stuff now that I know someone else likes it!

Good thing about pump-sprays
Good write-up.

We use the pump-sprays for the top of the head (where the hair opens up).

I was so releved when taking the kids to Sarah's Soccor game and noticing the sun beating down hard, to find the 50 spf sunblock in the car.  Made me hold off on saying anything about her car holding everything including the kitchen sink for at least a day !

You are so right!

Matthew, who will be 15 months in a few days, loves going outside! I bought a big bottle of Coppertone SPF 50 sunscreen that came with a little one on a key chain. I put the key chain one in the diaper bag for days when we go to the park. Though I've used it for those times, I forget to use sunscreen when we go to out into the backyard! Here I thought Matthew wouldn't need sunscreen in the backyard since we're not really out there for more than an hour and we stay in the shaded areas.  Well, lately when I give Matthew a bath, I can see a really pronounced tan line on his arms where his shirt sleeves end. The evidence of our short trips and short outdoor play time is apparent.  You're right. I have to have sunscreen everywhere in the house so that I can see it, use it whenever we head outside.

P20

Although I haven't yet used it on the kids, I have used myself and been really impressed with P20 (http://www.p20.co.uk/content/menu.htm) It is a once a day application, although you do have to be organised enough to put it on 90 minutes before going out... I have also trialled it on boyfriend and his mate when they went hiking for the day. Even heavy sweat didn't affect it, and they came back not burnt. Worth the money in my opinion.

Top tips
If the English summer ever arrives (its a cold, grey, rainy day today as it has been all week!) then I'll certainly remember this. My husband is rubbish at remembering to lather up the kiddies, and I do agree that letting some sun at their skin is good for them, but our one bottle of sun cream is never ever in the right place at the right time!
