Child ID kits

HOTMAMA by HOTMAMA Talking Back(December 2006) (rank 39th)

I have a card that comes every year with my childs school pictures that I carry around in my wallet.  It has a picture of my child, what to do if yur child is missing, and a blank fill in area for age, weight, height.  etc.  I received another

kit that has a finger print kit in it.  Awesome Idea!  I just want to share the things that you should make a list of and put in a safe place should your child ever become lost, or worse.  It is better to do this now, then trying to think of all of these things when you could be under extreem duress.

Keep a envelope and include

A recent photo of your child, remember to update it often. Especially if your child gets a new hair cut, scar, braces, glasses.  They grow very fast!

First, middle, last name, any nicknames, given by you or their friends

Address  (if you share custody include the other parents address and phone number also)

Phone number

Birthdate

Hair Color (and description, short., long, streaked, etc)

Eye Color

Allergies

Identifiable marks, scars, birthmarks, moles, braces, glasses, list any fillings also, piercings.

Blood type

Current Medications, (asthma, diabetic, etc)

A lock of hair for DNA purposes

Fingerprints, you can buy a finger print kit, or use a stamp pad and do the best you can.  Make sure there are no smears.

These are just a good start, you may want to include a currnet list of friends and relatives, names, address, phone numbers.    Do this for each child in your home, you could also do this for your close friends children and family members especially if you baby sit for them

ID Cards for Children ...
I actually started my own business because the thought of losing my kids by abduction or accident just frightened the life out of me. I make ID Cards and sell wristbands for children and for their parents to carry with them in case they go missing. Not just for children, but could be used for anyone, particularly useful for those with disabilities. I print my cards using a special card printer, they are printed on PVC - the same material that your credit cards are made out of, and have all vital information on them, including Doctor & Dentist contacts, medications, allergies, etc. If you're interested, let me know and I'll post the link to my site. Or email you the link if posting the link isn't allowed here. All Australian as well.

Hair DNA

AFAIK, it is only possible to get DNA from hair when it includes the root.

Maybe a better idea is to get a sterile cotton Q-Tip and rub it fairly vigourously on the inside of your child's cheek in his/her mouth. Then seal it in a new snaplock plastic bag. This will probably give the best DNA results.

Just a thought.

Hair DNA
For DNA testing, the hair must include the root. This requires that the hair be plucked, not cut. It is best to pluck the hair from the back of the head near the neck,  Thanks for catching that!   I agree that a swab of a babies mouth would be much nicer than plucking a presious hair.

Hair DNA

Just checked further and I've been told that it's important to dry a swab completely before putting it in a plastic bag. If it is still moist in any way bacteria will decrease the chances of getting good DNA results.

I'm also getting an ID kit put together, great idea!

Thanks, I looked it up but found nothing completely related, I did find out that in an emergency you can use a childs toothbrush also.  I think I would rather have a sure thing.  Just in case.  Thank you so much for checking into this

fantastic

it is a simple idea but, someting you wouldn't want to be thinking about if you lost your child, a little planning now could be all you need.

Great ID-ea.
I do most of this, but not all of it, Great idea.  I would hate to have to think of all these things if something did happen to her.  Thank you for all the details.  It has made it simple and easy for me to follow.
