Healthier Snack Alternatives

emmysmum by emmysmum Young Parent(December 2006) (rank 22nd)
It's afternoon tea time and your 4 year old child says 'Mummy i want a packet of chips' or 'Mummy i want some lollies.'

We don't want our children to have lots of lollies and chips, as the rate of childhood obesity is increasing at an exponentially large rate
each year.
So we decide ' what the heck, it is time we went shopping anyway' so you get your car keys and your handbag, put your child in the car etc etc and drive to the shopping centre.

Remembering we don't want our children to have too much junk food and that it's afternoon tea time, we park the car, jump out of the car etc etc and go to the health food aisle in our supermarket.

Aha. Rice wheels, Which flavour? BBQ, Chicken or cheese? It doesn't Matter! Why?
  • Because  they are baked, not fried
  • No added MSG
  • No artificial colours or flavours
  • AND they are gluten free
  • 98% fat free
That satisfies the savoury side of things, now for the sweet side of things. Yoghurt coated Berries and Apricot Delights in the snack size packs.

  • Made from real fruit
  • No artificial colours
  • No artificial flavours
  • Contains low fat content
  • Provides the sweetness of the fruit, so there is no need for added sugar!

Just remember we are trying to lower the rate of childhood obesity, so by providing your child with healthier alternatives to lollies and chips, you could be saving your childs life!

I am doing my share. and i purchase all these products, i even eat them myself! They taste great! The odd taste off chocolate doesn't hurt though

Re: Healthier Snack Alternatives

Duros are a great snack for the chip lovers that are hard to break.  They are a healthier alternative.  This article gives more information on them.

Variety.  Some bought products. Some homemade goodies. Fresh and dried fruits served in varying ways eg platter, ship etc design, served with yoghurt. Fresh peas, beans, carrots julliene.  If children are restricted they will break out when possible. They need to grow aquiring the taste for good food. Teach children to grow their food, in garden or pots.  they will love harvesting it themselves and will eat it raw.

healthhier snack alteritives
it seems that i was miss understood on Wednesday at no point did i say we eat junk food my daughter and i actually have celiacs (cant eat anything that contains gluten) so most commercial foods are out( gluten is derived from wheat which is used a thickening agent and also to make flavour stick to chips) . Research it its a very healthy diet. i was more so referring to those mums and dads that would read your article and say rite Johnny's not having chips anymore he can have a fruit bar filled with natural things that are good but only in moderation.

Sorry to have misunderstood you, my bad! if i had been aware i probably would've tried to translate what you were saying a little more carefully!
Shopping must be a big job for you, especially with young children!
Once again, I am sorry.

A way to encourage good snacks is to grow your own and have the chldren involved in the picking.  A tomatoe plant, cucmber or peas can be grown in a pot for those who do not want a garden.  This will be seasonal but may help children become interested in fresh food.

That is very true! But also when you go shopping, allow your child/ren to pick out a fruit or vegetable that they would like to try. 9 times out of 10 they will like it because they have picked it out!

Rice wheels

Sounds good, I have never had the Savory rice wheels, I am guessing that they are like the rice cakes we have here in the states.  I will have to look for them.  We have a snack drawer in our house with kid friendly snacks.  Popcorn, granola bars, trail mix, dried fruit and such. I will have to get some of these things you mentioned!

Rice wheels
In fact they are just the same as rice cakes, but they are bite sized pieces that are perfect for little children, and they are packaged like little packets of chips. You get them in the health food aisle of supermarket (that's if it works the same way in the states)

Back to natural foods
For us, we rather choose more natural foods. Fruits are the best for snacking and water for drinking. We cut down lots of packaged foods.

Back to natural foods
IF you read what i said to E.F, you would see that my daughter gets a big TEN servings of fruit and veg a day, sometimes more!
Children need a wider variety than just fruit! You need to mix the good fats with the bad fats. And i was promoting good fats my dear!
Fruit is not a savory  food, children  require salt in their diet!

very true please also read the lable on theback aswell

the tips are really good just a little word of warning cheek sodium levals(salt leval) and energy to how saticfied thay win feel after eating them if your child is ysed to eatting a bag of chip then one fruit bar that contains the good stuff may not cut it and too could wind up being to much energy the body then converts the excees to fat

this is only what i have been lead to belive and i post this thought to generate thought. healthy is about natral goodness yes but consider enerdy in and how active your childs life is or is not.

Whilst that may be a big factor in your beliefs, is it really worth spending your money on junk food for your children that may result as a major health issue in the long term? Major health issues such as diabetes and kidney disease can be very costly, so why not just do it right the first time round and reduce your child's risk?

as in 10 servings?  that is awesome - make sure they are all different colours so she gets plenty of all the different good things each offers.
Peace
