Wish I Knew Then What I Know Now

Marglr by Marglr Talking Back(December 2006) (rank 20th)
I really don't want to give advice, this is what I feel myself and may not fit other's lives. But IF I could go back I would relax more,I would appreciate more I would give more,I would do everything MORE! I would not have worried about money as much cause we always managed to eat. I would have worried less about housework because it always was clean enough. I wouldn't have let so many things go by and not done them because of it taking a little money. I would have taken the time from endless work to relax. I would have realized we did the best we could and congratulated ourselves on that. I would have been easier on myself! That's the big one. We do so much, cleaning, sewing, doctoring, cooking, driving every one, organizing this and that for school, organizations, church and everyone. Donating so much time and effort to everyone and thing. So what I think I'm trying to say is the time as parents goes by so fast, you do the best you can and I think we don't allow ourselves what we should. We should say  that we are doing the best we can instead of worrying that it's not enough. We deserve to take time off if only to be able to come back fresh and recharged and IF I was doing it again that would be at least once a month,a small block of time for the Mom and Dad.  This rambling comes from talking to so many and we all seem to suffer from regret. But the fact is we all are doing the best we can and that is all anyone can be expected to do so take the time to admire your kids, they wouldn't be that bright or doing that well if you didn't do a great job. So to all, congratulations!!! Parenting is the best anyone can do and you're doing it so well!

Will it really matter then
I totally agree with this advice - we all stress too much at times.  When I find that I am stressing out over all the things that need to be done or giving my self a hard time for my regrets - I ask myself "Will it really matter in 10 years time" - and most of the time the answer is NO!!!!  This really brings me back down to earth real quick.  Thanks for taking the time to put this into words.  Cheers Colleen

It's part of spirituality to stop and reflect

On self-congratulating.......Reflecting helps gain perspective. It's great from time to time to slow down, stop (and sometimes babies help us do this!) and take stock... and more than likely recognise a neglected self-congratulation. It's part of spirituality to stop and reflect.

"We do so much, cleaning, sewing, doctoring, cooking, driving every one, organizing this and that for school, organizations, church and everyone.". It is so true that institutions (sometimes especially churches) do often get in the way of individual and family life - creating busy-ness and sending us all in separate directions instead of slowing us down and helping us appreciate the important things.

Dear Changedbaby, I do love to help out and I think everything you do adds to your life but your right. Seems everything in our modern life is geared to makes us preform at top speed, slowing down is a spiritual gift we can give to ourselves, what a great way to word it,thanks

Too true!

I just spent a year studying and feeling stressed. Feeling guilty that I wasn't spending as much time with the kids and so on and so on.....but ya know, I averaged on distinctions, my home is clean, my children are fed and I managed to do this on my own......Its funny how we are quick to stress ourselves out and beat ourselves up over even the little things, it is almost natural to do it......yet when it comes to congratulating ourselves and saying Well done!! we almost have to stop and think about how to do it, or think about what it is we are commending ourselves for.....We should do it once a day and be thankful for surviving in a world that can be all so harsh to live in....that is an accomplishment in itself......I raise my glass (if only I had one) to all that are surviving and remember all those who didn't......Cheers!
