When to report advice - a link to the criteria

MumKim by MumKim Young Parent(December 2006) (rank 13th)
I agree that it is not always easy to know when to report advice.

Recently I have seen many pieces of advice reported that did not meet the criteria for report. However the criteria for reporting advice is not easy to find. I knew it was on the site
and accessed it just a few days ago. However it still took me over 20 minutes to find it just now to post a link in a comment in the reported advice section.

When should I use the report link

I really feel that the above information needs to be placed more prominently on the site hence my reason for posting this piece of advice. I knew it was there and still had to spend ages looking for it.

If you find a piece of advice that doesn't really belong in advice but does not meet the criteria for reporting you have the option of leaving  a comment on the advice (or you could send the member an email) letting them know that it would be better placed in Q&A  or their blog and that poorly scoring articles affect their ranking so they may want to delete their own article after they have moved the information to a more appropriate place.

Did you know that at this stage a member is not informed that their article has been reported or why unless it is reported by the automatic checking system that picks up potentially rude words. If you do report an article it may be a nice idea to let the member know why their article has been reported via Minti mail. Minti is a work in progress and I know the administrators are working hard to improve this and other parts of Minti.

Only members above level 5 have access to the reported articles section to vote and read comments on reported articles so for new members their advice just disappears and they don't know why unless someone Minti-mails them.

Some of you may feel that this belongs in my blog. That's fine, if so please feel free to vote this down or not vote on it at all.
I have posted this  here because I have noticed many members getting upset recently about about advice being reported for the wrong reasons and know that more people will read this here than on my blog.

I really don't mind how you vote on this article but please read this link before you consider reporting it

When should I use the report link

I really enjoy Minti and want it to be a positive experience for all.

Kim

Re: When to report advice - a link to the criteria

Great article Kim, it is good to be aware of these more obscure parts of the site as there are many like you say who are in the dark.  I hope this article is kept prominent for those who need to see it.

Someone mentioned below what is level 5 and proceeded to ask about it in Q&A.  May I take the liberty of saying here that it is the badge system that ranks members.  Usually the higher the ranking the more active the member is and so the more aware they are of what is happening within the site and in this case it helps the process of reporting and dealing with errant posts keep slightly democratic than dictatorial.  I hope this helps

Peace

Great advice! This should be a featured article for all new members.

Now another question. What is a level 5 member? Why are only level 5 members allowed to vote on comments and have access to the reported articles section to vote and read comments on reported articles?

I will post this in the Q & A part.

Take Care,

Lavendalady

RE: Reporting
Yes Rachel I do agree - its not until somebody either makes a genuine mistake or wants to do a certain thing that you realise that you just don't really know what to do - so publishing this article to everyone ought to clear up a lot of misunderstandings and embarrassments for all.  Good work and hopefully no more upsets from some of our members.

Thanks for making things a bit clearer Kim.  I think that you have placed your article in the perfect place, I mean 50 people have already looked at your article, whereas if it were in your blog, it may have been overlooked.  So thanks again.  Things can be a bit confusing on this site, and yes I have looked at the help, but I guess I will eventually get the swing of things.......hopefully.

thank you. Unfortunately I just looked in the reported advice section and there are several articles that have been reported that don't meet the criteria for report so the message is just not  getting through. Then again at least this article hasn't been reported so I suppose that is something.

Thank you for that...
Thank you for that. I know I am guilty of overlooking the obvious, writing in the wrong places and not fully understanding everything that goes on around here. It's all a learning process, different sites have different rules and expectations and it is a matter of getting to know the one you are apart of. I understand a few things more so thank you again

Thank you. I wasn't sure how this article would be taken. I have previously had an article reported for not being parenting advice even though several people had voted highly on it so I wasn't sure how this one would go.
I was just getting worried that some new members might be turned of Minti when their advice disappeared into thin air.
