ADHD Children and Homework

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(December 2006) (rank 1st)

I was constantly getting frustrated that when my son brought home his school homework,

it would take the whole evening to get it done,
he would wander around saying he was looking for things,
pencils, paper etc.
we would then have the thinking time......

then the I can't do it phase....
back to more thinking,
whoops not got the right pencil and so it went on and on and on.

It was so hard for it not to end up with me snapping and completely demoralising him and him retreating into his 'world'

Anyway a great piece of advice was given to me that actually works,

read the homework through slowly and make a game of getting the right things,
like i bet I can get the right paper before you can find the right pencil etc
then get an egg timer, set it for 5 minutes, and agree for every 5 minutes of concentrated work, you both have some 'crazy' time

As soon as the timer goes off,
Do a kind of 'shake and wake' session,
get rid of some energy

Then reset the timer for another 5 minutes and keep doing this till homework is done.

It really worked for my son and we now quickly get the homework done without the stress factor, he is more than prepared to work knowing that instead of sitting there until its done that all he has to do is concentrate for 5 minutes then he gets a funbreak.

If you are anything like me, you will go to extraordinary lengths to get their homework done without all the hassle

Re: ADHD Children and Homework

I did a CBT web PhD to help children in hospital. Moms are now using it for ADHD

Responses from independent research:

"This is perfect and what me and my family have been waiting years
for. My 9 yr old has A.D.H.D and presents behavioural difficulties.
His biological father rejected him a yr ago and this hasn't helped,
his self esteem is very low and finds making new friends very
stressful. The local social services tell me he needs therapy like
this but are unable to provide it! I am having to pay a private
therapist to help my son so when this comes in which I know would
benefit many parents that I email, talk to etc then I can guarantee at
least 15 sales for definite....where do I order!!!! Great idea and
very user friendly, fab idea and so much needed for the 21st century
where many children face daily struggles with little or no help and so
they suffer. I am in 100% support of this stimulating and so much
needed idea!" Mrs Garvey, East Yorkshire

"I did these exercises with my daughter; she loved them and wants to
play again." Mrs Rogers, Plymouth

"This product is excellent and would also be beneficial to children
with disorders such as ADHD. It would also be a great intro DVD for
children who are about to be admitted to hospital as there was nothing
like this about when my son had to go in for a heart op and it would
have helped him no end." Miss Gooch, Norwich

"I think it's an extremely good idea."Mrs Hirst, Eastbourne

"Whilst doing this survey my son who is 7 and a type 1 diabetic came
to watch and listen of his own accord; he really liked it." Ms Halden,
West Midlands

"Great idea as it is." Miss Hartley, Lancashire

"I looked at the video with my 6 yr old and she loved it." Mrs Reeves, Norfolk

"This would be well received in schools." Mrs McFadden, Antrim

Re: ADHD Children and Homework

This sounds great. I find myself gritting my teeth and trying not to sigh audibly, as Ruth goes off on yet another abstract adventure. At the moment all her work has to be done on a lined White board. Then Photo copied. Then we can spend ages getting the photo copy exactly as she needs it. Arrrgh. However, she is quite into games, and this might just distract her from her obssesions, long enough to get the work finished, photocopied and completed. Thanks. Will be looking forward to giving this a go.

Luv Winnie.xx

ADHD and homework
That is such a good idea. Homework is a huge stress for me. Both boys should be A or B students, however homework lets them down. I tend to get snappy after 2 hours of forgetting stuff and thinking time! - for each boy !!! I'm going out to get a timer.

ADHD and homework
Thanks it definitely works for my son, he actually gets his work done much more efficiently as I get a full concentrated 5 minutes at a time. We then have the rest of the evening for other more exciting things
