Head-Banging Babies

Wendily by Wendily Walking(May 2006) (rank 500+)
My 51/2 month old little girl continually wiggles around the cot while sleeping, usually managing to bang her head on the sides and waking herself up. We have tried the sleeping bag and sheets tucked tightly, but she still manages to move around. With all the SIDS issues we know
Bumpers etc are not an option. So if anyone has info or ideas on how we can tame our little girls sleeping antics it would be greatly appreciated.

My 5 1/2 month old son is also a squirmy wormy. He bangs his head all the time into the side of his crib. Our doctor told us to remove the bumper from his crib, but it was awful watching him bang his head into the side and wake himself up over and over. He also kept getting an arm or leg stuck on the outside of his crib and not having enough leverage to roll himself out of the position. I thought maybe he'd teach himself not to bang his head or get stuck, so we left the bumper off for 10 nights, but it didn't work. Finally, after much research about why bumpers are not recommended, I put the bumper back in his crib. I read that bumpers are generally not recommended because, for one reason, it is thought that a baby might suffocate if he rolls against it and puts his face in it. My baby is a real pro at rolling over and moving around, so I'm not as concerned about this risk as I would be if he were less mobile. Also I tied the bumper very tightly to the rails and tucked it  down really far so that he can't get stuck under it. There's only about 3 inches of the bumper sticking up above the top of the mattress,  but it's enough so that when he hits his head, he doesn' t hit the hard railing. When I put the bumper back in, I checked on him constantly for the first week or so, but for my baby, it seems to be working well. You'll have to use your own judgement with your baby and do what feels right to you.  Also, if your baby is starting to pull up on her crib rails, you definitely won't want to use a bumper, but my guy isn't pulling up yet.

Another option might be a really tight swaddle that your daughter wouldn't be able to break out of. My little Houdini doesn't use it anymore, but the SwaddleEaze  was the only swaddle he couldn't break out of.

Common sense
As with all things it is about doing the research, finding that which suits your child specifically, esp if not first child, and then implementing it with full awareness of the pros and cons.  Great article.  Glad it worked for you.  Thank you for sharing so clearly how you came to your specific decision.
Peace

my son is the same..
My son is constantly bummping his head... We used the bumpers... I don't know if they are truely a good thing or a bad thing.  For us they were a good thing.  Poor little guy would crawl in his sleep until he hit the top and we would hear a big thump then a cry, so we put them in... Stopped his crying and waking up. We just checked on him and did not put anything else in the cot with him other then his blanket to keep him warm. We made sure they were secure and that he was unable to get under them by tucking them down into the matress...

Bumpers
We had the same experience with our child.  Left the bumpers in and it seemed to help.

my little say..

My son has had apnea and slept on his stomach and face since birth, so I have a motion monitor on him whenever he is asleep. it detects breathing movements. he has had a bumper since he was 6 weeks old because he was getting his arms and legs stuck out through the bars. liked to sleep sideways lol. now that he is in his own room he purposefully bashes his head against the end of the cot, and wriggles out of the blankets. so when he gets into bed with mum and dad in the morning he is a frozen squirmy wormy! damn winter! but it doesn't seem to phase him thankfully. he also does it when he has playtime on the floor. my poor walls are sure taking a beating!

In terms of sids, I think that just being that little bit extra vigilent by buying a monitor that will help you rest easier, by taking precautions and extra checkups before bed will help. im sure you all know if bubs is going to do something they will do it regardless. so just go with it.

This worked for me too..
My son was a real roller from 5 months onwards when we took him out of the swaddle. Now, we had a camera monitor (gave it up at 12 months when I felt safe too and the little light was now keeping him up), so it horrified me to see him go from being on his back before 5 months, to going completely huddled onto his front (every night), sleeping on his face!!!!!!, I had to give him the dummy (pacifier) back so it would create a space between the mattress and his nose!!!! A gro bar (baby sleeping bag) was the only thing that could keep him warm and safe in regards to bedding...I didn't put the bumpers in until I could see (around 7 months) him getting stuck in the bars and really rolled about. The bumpers, I tucked down as well, so only three inches were showing, this allowed for 95% of the bars to be circulation free. I have a room temperature monitor in the room to make sure it doesn't get too hot as my son likes to sleep with the door closed in pitch darkness. My husband and I (thanks to a tip from nanna) check on our boy before bed each night, with the use of our handy mobile phone backlights (creating a very soft glow) - it's a plus to see a cutie sleeping...we would also check his position in the cot (sometimes he would be nestled in the corner) - so we gently move him into the middle. At 18 months plus he sleeps however and where ever, the bumbers are still there, but he has rolled on them so many times I think they are now an inch, but still very helpful and useful in protecting him from hurting himself

Squirmy wormies

My son is a squirmy wormy too. At about 5 months when he was trying to roll over and inch around like a rolly polly his arms and feet sometimes got stuck in the space between the bumper and the mattress.  Sometimes he got stuck enough that he couldn't get out. But I didn't remove the bumpers then just yet. When my son turned 8 months and was crawling well, then I finally did remove the bumpers. The bumpers became an object of fascination so he pulled and tugged and chewed. But we co-sleep so the only time he's in the crib is when I couldn't keep an eye on him.

Another Bumper User

We also used a bumper with both our kids - I did a quick read on when/why to not have a bumper, and they seem to be centered around babies that don't move. One potential concern is getting fresh air circulating, but if you have a ceiling fan, this should not be a concern at all.

Just another parent's opinion.

We use a cot bumper too
Agree agree agree. We also use a cot bumper and Codi has had no issues with it regarding SIDS. It has certainly made his sleeping in his cot a lot better experience for him.
