In the right size diapers?

pfallerj by pfallerj Proud Parent(May 2006) (rank 95th)

Today's Tip - Keep a handle on what size diapers your baby should be in...or face the consequences

Our son seems to be growing way too fast for us to keep up. How do we know? Once he gets too big for his diapers all his bowel movements seem

to find a way to leak out the sides and on to us. It'd be nice if we could rely on the pediatrician visits to montitor his weight, but alas, we've got to be more vigilant.

The easiest way to see how much your baby weighs is to step on a scale with him, note the weight and then weigh yourself without him. Then take a look at the diaper package and see if he's too big or two small for it. And, in our case, another big indicator he needs to jump up in size is leaky bowel movements or a diaper that seems to fit awkwardly when you put it on.

Yep...
If the nappy fits wear it... Oh yes been there done that many times....  I never thought about weighing him like this.. I think I'll go out and get some scales.. Only problem with that is, I'll be able to see how much I weigh to. Not sure I like that Idea...

Weight guidelines on diapers

As you've heard me say over and over again, Matthew is a big boy. He didn't even get to use the newborn size diaper. After a few months, I find that Matthew moved up a size when he was about 5 lbs below the lower limit of the next larger diaper. He is now in size 5 diaper, which is the only size that he has stayed with for more than 2 months.

Also, if one brand leaks out at the waist, I recommend trying out other brands (if you're so inclined). Some moms swear by a particular brand.

Weight guidelines on diapers
I swear by pampers... Love em, keep bubs butt nice and dry... And they are high enough around the waist so that if he does have a messy diaper it does not come out the top.. Found that out the hard way... :)

diapers
We've got a 3 blowout rule. After 3 blowouts we move up a size in diapers. So far it has worked pretty well. The size guides on diapers seem totally arbitrary.

Re: diapers
I agree with your  blowout rule.  The weight guidelines for diapers are pretty broad and it is better to go by "feel" -- is your baby getting squished by the leg openings or waistband (bad)?  Are the leaks becoming more frequent?

We are now straddling the line between size 3 and 4 and have decided to use the bigger diapers at night but keep going with the smaller ones for during the day because the size 3's are cheaper.  And we're cheap.
