How I lost weight after baby

lightbee by lightbee Young Parent(December 2006) (rank 17th)

My weight has always been a struggle for me.  Before I fell pregnant I weighed 86kg and - although I didn't put on much weight during pregnancy itself - I ballooned during my daughter's first 6 months of life.  By the time I decided I really had to do

something about it, I was 95kg and had extremely bad knee joint pain.

By November last year (about 3 years after my decision to lose weight) I had gotten my weight down to 67kg.  I don't have a magic formula.  I used a number of different diets - all of which worked for different reasons.  The things that all of them had in common which I believe helped me were:

  1. It encouraged me to eat more fruit and vegies - 7 a day as they say (2 fruit serves, 5 vegie serves).
  2. I began drinking at least 2 litres of water a day.
  3. I paid more attention to my portions at meals.
  4. I ate proper meals rather than grazing and snacking all day.
  5. I exercised most days.
  6. I made a friend who was also trying to lose weight and we encouraged each other.

When I say I exercised, the things I did were:

  1. I would tape Aerobics Oz Style in the morning and do them in the lounge room during the day while my daughter watched me from her bouncer.
  2. After my husband got home from work, he would look after baby and I would go for a walk around where I live.
  3. For these evening/night-time walks I would usually meet with my friend (see above) and that would also stop either of us from piking as we didn't want to let the other person down.
  4. When I started working full-time (and became a single mother) I would make lunchtime my exercise time and would either walk or go on our work's gym equipment.  Strangely, despite the access to gym equipment, I usually prefer to go for a walk outside.
  5. I like to do a little 2 or 3 minute yoga routine each morning.  My kids now try to do my "stretching" with me.  Even though it's not a huge amount, I find it really keeps me toned and flexible, and I notice the difference if I haven't done it for a few days!

I hope these tips might help someone else in the same situation.  I know lots of women struggle with their weight after having babies.

Same situation
I'm in the same situation you were in (and ironically enough our weights were the same before, during and after pregnancy). I bought the core secrets program, but I can't seem to motivate myself to start it. It was great reading your article, though... at least I know I have a chance of at least losing some weight.

Same situation
I think the first 2 or 3 weeks are the hardest, when you're trying to change habits you've had ingrained for ages.  The more support you've got the easier it is.  I guess that's part of what makes Minti so good!

baby weight lifting
How about this : I lay on my back on the floor and "bench press" my little boy ... He thinks it is funny and it helps tone my arms and upper chest ... We call it "Flying Baby" ! Lots of fun and healthy too !

Well done
I'm happy that works for you. I actually did something similar. I still do the strecthing every morning too. Discipline with what you eat and what you do for your body is the key for staying health. Well done.

Self-discipline
Discipline is so important.  I think that the thing that keeps a person on doing this is wanting it for themselves.  If you dont want it in your own heart for your own life you will lapse sooner or later regardless of the good results, and sometimes because of them.
I want it, but struggle when I am tired to do the exercises. I dont have anyone to do it with, though i would love a 'buddy' as it would focus me much more.  I do my best to be consistent though, and each day is a new day, so if I missed a day that isnt the start of a trend, it is just a shame, then I can carry on the next day without feeling like I have so much to make up.  Slowly but surely it is happening.
Great article, thank you lightbee.
Peace
