Xmas for the big kids

Bethdyl by Bethdyl Talking(December 2006) (rank 376th)

Everyone loves getting gifts at Xmas.  Even us big kids.  I have an alternative version for Kris Kringle.  Instead of getting names out of a hat etc.  What we do is this.  Each adult buys a present and wraps it with no name.  Once all the kids

have opened their presents we send them off to play with their new toys and start our game.  You put numbers in a hat (9 people 9 numbers etc)  Each person pulls a number out of the hat and that is the first order.  Number 1 picks a present (not allowed to pick your own) and opens it.  Number 2 goes next.  Once they open theirs if they like number 1's present then they can swap them and number 1 can't refuse.  You go through all the adults and the same principle follows with each number.  When you open your present you can swap with any of those that have opened and they can't say no.

Once the first round is finished all the numbers go back in and you pick a number again and go through the same process.  This time the presents are all opened so you get to pick and swap with anyone you obviously want to go last cause you get the pick of the crop.

We have been doing this for several years now and the adults have just as much fun as the kids.  There is always the one present no one wants (the hankies or the frog ornament)  We brought in the rule of no vouchers as everyone started to buy them.  Last year we ended up in hysterics as nana ended up with a shot glass drinkning chess board game!  Go Nana!

Adaptation idea
Sounds great.  I can see an opportunity for adapting it for our friends annual birthday dinner also - we all have our birthday within a month of each other, so what we do is all meet up for a dinner party - this sounds perfect as it will save us from buying multiple gifts so soon after christmas also.

Btw, Rachel - in your comment you said you were thinking of doing it this last christmas with your motherinlaw and family - how did it go?
Peace
