making breakfast more interesting

celtica189 by celtica189 Speaking(December 2006) (rank 500+)

Hi all, my dd has always been a great eater. As of late she has decided she doesnt want breakfast and refuses to eat it. I have always provided a variety and I just dont understand why she wont eat. When I ask her why she wont eat she

just tells me " I dont want it !!!"

I know breakfast is the most important meal and I am more than a little concerned about her falling into the trap of regularly missing breakfast, any advice would be great. DD is very, very stubborn and strong willed, and the arguments at brekkie time are becoming tiring.

i found that children at 3 years old can become very fussy and independant. when my kids went through this i got them to get involved and help make their breakfast. it was fun for them and usually worked,  i would also offer shakes , but i also had a daughter who was hell bent on keeping her bottle at 3 and because she was always suffering tonsilitis i used to give her a bottle when she woke at 4 or 5 am  so this would stop her wanting brekky(bad mummys) it all got better when i woul put a bowl in the fridge with weet bix or other cereal in it and the put a little jug of milk beside it , she would then go to the fridge and make her own brekky. it was fun for her  and she always wanted brekky without fail.

Kids will always eat when hungry, sometimes they just dont feel like eating when they first get up.

keep an eye on her weight and if she is still putting on weight then all is well. If you feel really concerned you can ask a gp or get a childs multivitamin to help out.

Same for me
My eldest daughter has started doing the same thing - she always used to be so good with breakfast and now she's saying "I don't want it" when it comes to breakfast.  She's 4 and a half.  Your advice that they'll eat when they're hungry gives me hope - and certainly in my daughter's case, she's growing wonderfully well.

independent breakfast making is great
i like the idea of setting things up so they can make their own breakfast.  i think a lot of stress wtih my kids at various times has come from me not recognizing that they are more than capable of taking the next step in independence.  kids who are starting to be responsible for themselves are happier and more confident--and consequently easier to parent.
