Reported advice

lexiw by lexiw Young Parent(December 2006) (rank 9th)

My advice is to really think about the article before you report it. I am referring to a peice of advice in particular but this does go for all advice.

Think about the situation I mean really think about it.

I had a really great pet she

was a beautiful dog and she was my best friend. She was a part of my family and I loved her very very much. I lived in remote area where there was no medical help for humans or animals close by. I called my dog and called and called. when she didn't come I went looking for her fearing that she had been bitten by a snake and I would never find her. Well I was right about the snake bite but I did find her. She was limp and her beautiful eyes were pleading with me to help her.

I found where the bite was and did everything I could think of to get out the poion including the old fashion sucking it out. I was desperate, I knew that I couldn't get help for her. I knew that she was going to die. I sat with her all night getting advice over the phone from the nearest vet who in the end suggested that I put her out of her misery and put her to sleep. You try putting one of your family members to sleep. It took me hours more to decide that I had to do it that she had no chance and that I was doing what was best for her. It was the hardest thing in the world to do but I did it.

I can tell you that if I had of had any other option I would have used it. ANYTHING. I moved out of the area after that and I could never live in a remote area again. I had to have counselling and I have not owned a pet since. If you were in this situation and you knew of something that could possibly save your animals life wouldn't you use it. I can say for 100% sure that I would even if it was not something that was coventional or what I thought was cruel.

So when you are reporting advice that has suggestions like this just take a few minutes to remember my story and think of what you would do.

sorry but I would have to disagree
Hi there sorry rachael but I would have to disagree. The article in question you are talking about is about kids and pets really when you think of it. I have 7 kids and have lost pets from snake bite. Losing a pet of your childrens is very hard on them and if you can save them from unnecessary heart break I think do it. I dont know if you know how a snake bite kills a cat or a dog etc.... but it makes them bleed internally as it makes their blood unable to coagulate. So they slowly die. As it has been said before this is no way for an animal to die and especially around kids if their is no other alternative. Okay you can tell them to go away but eveyone who has kids knows that this is impossible as most kids will want to be there with their animal. I just disagree if someone in this situation can use this to stop their kids going through some pain then use it. If they live to far from a vet if they had money when they got their pet and then for whatever reason could no longer afford it. If the car is broken and they can not afford to fix it. There is a magnitude of reasons this is about saving a family pet from snake bite. just my 2 cents any way

I understand, but I don't see this explained in the article?....I didn't get that it has an effect on children, I thought it was advice on saving your pet by a medical solution, until you explained it...I am just thinking of those parents out there and them understanding how it relates...maybe updating the article will help and it will show the effects on the family, dealing with the event with the children etc, as I would love to learn from this if anything ever happened to our dog, lemonade in front of Codi...

I understand
I understand, we have been clarifying the rules on reporting and should only be done if there is a copyright violation (cut and paste from another article). I think we are getting clearer on the Mission of Minti that parents searching outside of Minti find articles that help them with parenting, copyright doesn't. If we stick to this we can't go wrong. I do understand pets are children too and are a part of the family, I have a dog, I personally would have provided this advice on Petster.com or placed this advice on my blog, and I'm sorry but I don't see this as parenting advice (unless it's about Pets and Children)...because I feel that the Minti Advice Area is for parenting advice only and we set it up with this intention. However, I agree that advice should only be reported there is a copyright violation...Minti's mission is to provide the parenting articles for human children with the rating rising to the top of the most helpful parenting advice. Maybe with should do a Pets Advice site, I am not sure. In the meantime, you may like to check out Petster.com, it's a really great site...

totally agree

i know exactly who you are talking about and i've sent my sympathies to her  and wrote in her article about it. Good on you for writing this article. Some people don't think before they speak and type.

Some people don't have children and instead, animals are their children, and be in their shoes. I'm an animal lover thru and thru, and i also have a child and i would do anything to save them both.

Well written article and very well said. I couldn't agree more.
