Toddler Night-time routine - tips to make it easier

Jackie by Jackie Walking(February 2006) (rank 447th)

As all parents know the time between 6pm and 7.30pm at night is always manic. Often you have had a hard day at work and just want to relax but you also know your toddlers time clock is so sensitive - if you have a blow out then your in big trouble.

We have a 2.5yr old and we noticed recently that since the busy christmas period our bedtime routine for Max was out of control and totally ad hoc.

My husband and I discussed ideas on how we could improve to ensure a more disciplined approach which would be kinder to us and would also ensure our son gets everything he needs. The following are some tips which may help others...

1. No major physcial activity from 6pm onwards - that means no swings/park etc

2. Tape the news - we found ourselves trying to juggle things around the 7.00pm news. Now we tape it and know we can watch it in peace once Max has gone to sleep.

3. Target dinner 6.30-7.00 - any later and he is over it

4. A promise of a bed-time story before bed - this not only achieves a basic educational benefit but also helps to motivate dinner & bathtime

5. Be flexible on weekends/ special occasions - but always try and return to our base routine

Our goal is for our son to be in bed by 7.30pm

So far so good but as any parent of a toddler knows it is a constant  game.

Re: Toddler Night-time routine - tips to make it easier

Great article and totally agree with you there, I have five children aged from 7 to 9months, so you can just imagine how hectic it is a bed time.  What i do is i read a story to each of my kids but i let them pick out the story they want (my 9month old is good old fashioned nursery ryhmes lol) and every second page i get them to read it out too me which i find by the time they try to read the 4th page they are fast asleep.  As they say reading relaxes the mind and i know it does as i have read in bed and woken up the next day with the book on my chest lol, angel blessings to you n your family

Worked for me
A rigid routine that has total flexibility is perfect in our home, it means that everything gets done in good time, no rush, (but with plenty of fun!) and things just seems to happen.  By 7 she is in bed, I am reading the story and by 7:20 she is asleep.
Peace

Another tip.

We have a similar routine with our son.  One other thing we do is he always has warm milk and snuggles on my lap with his blanket while I read him his story.  It definately puts him in a drowsy state of mind.

Even if he's a little reluctant to get going, because he knows it means bedtime, he Loves choosing one of his fuzzy blankets and waiting for me while I get his milk.  He says, " Gots a lellow banket and meet mommy on the couch".

The routine also helps if I'm not home.  It's always the same, so he always knows it's bedtime even if it's daddy or his big sister putting him to bed.

Toddler Routine
Thanks for you advice.  I always end up slacking whenever I try to do something like this.  Lately it was painting the house that interfered big time but I think we are almost back on track.  It is nice to see that someone else thinks the same way.  Great tip.

Taping the News
Jackie - great article. I hadn't thought of taping the news yet. Cool idea. Totally agree with your article.

Techniques
Great idea to tape the news. What time does he wake up? Just helpful to know. Wind down time is a great idea too.
