Head Lice - What a drag!

monyq83 by monyq83 Young Parent(December 2006) (rank 12th)

As another school year fast approaches, so does the possibility of our darlings coming home with more than just themselves.

Unfortunately Head Lice is just a part of life for some kids, and boy is it a nightmare to get rid of them. So what can you do?

There are so many different products on the market, it can be quite baffling knowing which one to pick. Today my aim is to try and help you choose which one suits you best.

There are plenty of brand name products, which all claim to do a different thing. Most are good if your child only has a few lice, but for a severe outbreak, I would reccommend a product called KP24. http://www.kp24.com.au/ Please only use this if you have tried everything else, as it absolutely stinks! But it really does work.

If your child's hair isnt too bad, Nads make a really great head lice foam, which smells lovely. It has a cooling effect on the head as well, which soothes the itching. http://www.nads.com/flash.htm

There are also a number of natural remedies, which is really up to the parent's personal preference.

Conditioner is great (you really have to pack it on though) as it stuns the lice, allowing you to comb them and the eggs out of the hair, but if you take too long, the lice can wake back up and will move to where youve just combed, and you will have to start all over again.

Also Ive heard that olive oil works in the same manner, as does paint thinners, funnily enough. My fiance swears by it, but we wont go there!

Re: Head Lice - What a drag!
Head lice Doesn't have to be a way of life for some kids. It is imperative that we not except it! Try combing with a good lice comb twice a week for 2-5 minutes each time. As parents we would catch the little beasts before they had a chance to totally infest our children. Please see my advice Head lice an evil foe to the attendance issue. Thanks for sharing!

Not so good in Queensland
Hi there, I just wanted to mention that head lice are a real problem in Far North Queensland especially due to the hot, humid weather.  A lot of parents in the tropics, myself included, have found that the head lice have now developed an immunity to KP24.  In fact head lice develop an immunity to most products when we have to use them on a regular basis.  If a parent finds this happens, they may find it necessary to change their product regularly.  I use the conditioner idea regularly, as you are right it does stun the lice and therefore it is not something they can develope an immunity to.  Thanks for your advice - I hope you don't have the same problem of immunity in your area or the same severity of head lice problems that we have in the tropics.

yeah i know what you mean. i got them myself from the boys after i left their dad, and had noone to go thru my hair and make sure there was none left after i did a treatment, thus reinfecting the kids. it was so so so annoying!

Ewww but good advice
Ya know it doesn't matter how many times I have cleaned lice from hair, how many times I have read, seen or thought about them....I still scratch at the thought.....good advice though. These little buggers don't care who you are, just as long as they get a feed.....horrid things.....

lol funny you should say that, i was scratching non stop during this advice. oh i also forgot to mention that when you are treating your children for head lice, please remember to wash their bed linen afterwards as well, because lice can remain on their bedclothes for quite a while!
