Headlice

lexiw by lexiw Young Parent(December 2006) (rank 10th)

I have spent thousands of dollars over the years on every sort of headlice treatment that there is and nothing has worked very well. I was at my wits end and I thought about shaving my daughters heads and buying them wigs I was that desperate, I don't think I

could have actuallydone this but it did cross my mind.

Headlice are so horrible for the child experiencing it and I have had a lot of arguments with parents who say they couldn't be bothered doing their kids hair because they are only going to get it again. I have actually reported two mothers to department of childrens services for this as the children involved had developed sores on their heads due to the scratching. I believe that this is neglect and cannot believe any parent would have that attitude.

After trying evrything else someone told me it would be as simple as putting cheap white conditioner in the childs hair and combing through every second or third day . I was very sceptical as this just seemed to simple but guess what IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!! Since I have been doing this and other parents I know say the same thing, I have had no problems with headlice. I am happy and my children are so much happier. Neither parents nor children like having to put chemicals in the hair and this is so basic, easy and cheap that I still can't believe the wonderful results.

I really hope this helps someone because it has helped my family and my friends families.

NITS

Don't you just love it when you children start scrathing their heads.  Just mention the words NITS and I start scratching :)

We use the cheap conditioner trick when we have headlice is our household but the other thing that I do to prevent them is I have a spray bottom which is water with a few drops of tea tree oil in it and I spray their hair every morning and it works a treat for keeping them away.

Hugs

Jen

Top advice,I know that tea tree lotion massaged through the hair is fool proof, the vinegar dipped comb is another fool proof way of getting the eggs off the hair.I used to do all my step kids friends as well when they came over. There seemed to be an epidemic and not all parents were vigilant.Once I  treated them with the tea-tree I had no worries. Thanks Lexi regards Merle

Hi Merle, Here is a new one to me.  Do you just massage the tea tree lotion through their hair or do you comb it out as well?  Always looking for advice with this issue as I have so much trouble here in QLD.  Cheers Colleen

Headlice
Hi I've found this method to be the most effective as well and I hate using the chemicals in my boys hair.  Also my boys love it when I do it with the conditioner as it is really pampering for them.  Results equals beautiful hair and no head lice.  The reason this works is because the conditioner stuns the lice for 20 minutes and you are able to make sure you get them all because they are not running around.  Another good tip to use with the conditioner that the chemist advised me - dip your lice comb in vinegar each time prior to combing through hair.  This allows the glue that holds the eggs to the hair to dissolve and you get most of the eggs that way.  This means less chance of missing any live lice or eggs - then you don't have to do it as often.  Works for me.  Thanks for the advice it is well written.

Oh nits
This is a weekly ritual in our home and sometimes I have jsut had enough. I reckon we should have a national nit day and all kids should be kept home to be treated or the government should provide the treatment for each child in school hehe I hate walking dandruff hehe
Conditioner is a cheaper alternative and does work i find but have also found that dettol works too the chemist told me to try it it worked. But is more expensive than conditioner.

I meant to also add that I have heard of using conditioner as well and many of my friends swore by it. Anything is worth a try isn't it......

Orange Medic
I have to say I don't miss these days....but where I was fighting these little %#! I used something called 'orange medic'. It was the only thing would work for me and that didn't smell like I had bathed my kids in chemical compound....
