baby monitors that have breathing alarms WARNING!!!!!!!!

celtica189 by celtica189 Speaking(December 2006) (rank 500+)

Hi guys i just wanted to let other parents out there to know a little something i discovered not long back that gave me quite a chill.

when i had Connor my mother bought me a baby monitor , an angel care one with the sensor pad that goes

under the mattress and if your baby stops breathing for 20 seconds a high pitched alarm goes off, this was a huge comfort for me as i was laying awake alot at night watching him because i was so nervous about sids (yes i realise he is baby 5 )

One morning i got bub up for his bottle and forgot to turn the swith off(the alarm goes off cause it thinks bub isnt breathing, and i usually have to make a mad dash to turn it off) anyway one night it was really hot and i had my ceiling fan on the lowest to keep the room a little cooler, in the morning we got up as usual and it was then i realised the alarm hadnt gone off, i checked the batteries and the switch but it was all fine . later that day i shut the fan off and then the alarm went off on the monitor scaring the crap out of me.

Even though the fan was on the lowest possible level it must have been enough to make the sensor pad think it was breathing.

I quickly realised also that at any time connor may have stopped breathing the monitor would not have picked it up due to the air from the fan.

so if anyone else is using one or planning to use one (and they are a brilliant device otherwise) then please be aware of this problem and maybe adjust the sensitivity of the sensor.

i would hate to think that peoiple dont know this can happen and are usng the fans during summer.

Thank you I am about to buy one. It would be good if they had a warning like this on the box somewhere. Again thank you as I have a fan heater in the nursery.

Re: baby monitors that have breathing alarms WARNING!!!!!!!!

The instructions on the old angelcare baby monitor do say to test it and set it to the best sensitivity level when you set it up; no doubt the latest model has similar instructions.  The settings are adjustable so that you can choose the appropriate level for your room/cot/bed/bedding/mattress/floor coverings etc.

OMG thats very scary. I have never used a monitor like that before but thank God you realised what it was doing. You should contact the company who makes it and notify them of the problem!

All the best to you and yours.

angel care

we got one of those too when we were getting everthing for charlie and i would forget too, but when we got the new monitor (for his sleep apnea) i did the test on them the new one picked up all the attacks and the angel care only got 2 or something like it,  so i now don't use it anymore and we only use it as a monitor for sound now

they have got a new one out now too and from what i have heard about it its much better than the 1st and picks up much more too

Angel Care Monitor
Hi there, did you know that you can adjust the sensitivity of the monitor?  You should adjust it down to be at it's least sensitive level, depending upon your bedding / flooring etc.  For example, at it's highest sensitivity, it will detect an adult walking on a wooden floor in the same room.

We have ours on a lower setting when we stay at our Mum's because Jaydee sleeps in a portable their, and it picks us up walking into the room etc as it is close to the ground and the mattress is thinner...  At home, we make it more sensitive to accommodate the thicker mattress, carpeted floor etc.

I hope this helps you, and yes, they are brilliant aren't they?!  It helps me to sleep at night, and relax when we put him down for naps during the day.

also
A good friend of mine had similar problems with a little  baby she was going to adopt. The agency issued one of these monitors as mandatory but it was so sensitive it kept going off all night even though the little one was all right. After a couple of days of this, they disconnected the monitor so they could get some sleep and when the agency found out, there was a HUGE rigamarole.
