Lately in our house we have been dealing with a number of issues in relation to safety.
When Miss Cheeky Chops first began to crawl, we got down on her level and looked for any hazards that she may come across. We placed plug protectors in all the
unused electrical sockets, we tied up with cable ties any loose electrical cords and removed our coffee table as it’s corners were very pointy and sharp.
The next stage for us was when she began walking which I think possesses the most risk in the home for safety.
I had read about some magnetic locks which you place inside of your cupboards. You then need a ‘key’ which is another magnet which allows you to unlock the cabinet. We purchased these magnets and placed then in our kitchen, laundry and bathroom and I personally have found these to be worth there weight in gold. They have stoped Miss Cheeky chops from opening cupboards that contain my cleaning products, glassware/crockery and bathroom items.
For those of you who have read my blog or heard of my woes with Miss Cheeky Chops leaving her room at night, I have found another product which also falls under home safety. Door Knob Covers. These are fantastic. They are made from a single piece of plastic which clamps over your existing door knob. The plastic is marked with two red dots which you then squeeze in conjunction with the knob and the door opens. I now have one on the inside of her door, it allows me to enter her room but she cannot leave unless I open the door for her. You may think this is cruel, but until you have a child who constantly gets out of their bed and room it is a god send.
Another thing we do in our kitchen is to use the kill switches that operate our cook top and stove. I have caught Miss Cheeky Chops on countless occasions trying to turn on the oven or trying to reach the knobs on the stove top, if it wasn’t for us using the kill switch I shudder to think what might have happened.
Please remember this is no safety device on the market which can prevent accidents – only common sense and parental supervision. These are my views and experiences.
Take care and be well, Michelle
