Home Safety....

michellei by michellei Talking Back(December 2006) (rank 41st)

Lately in our house we have been dealing with a number of issues in relation to safety.

When Miss Cheeky Chops first began to crawl, we got down on her level and looked for any hazards that she may come across. We placed plug protectors in all the

unused electrical sockets, we tied up with cable ties any loose electrical cords and removed our coffee table as it’s corners were very pointy and sharp.

The next stage for us was when she began walking which I think possesses the most risk in the home for safety.

I had read about some magnetic locks which you place inside of your cupboards. You then need a ‘key’ which is another magnet which allows you to unlock the cabinet. We purchased these magnets and placed then in our kitchen, laundry and bathroom and I personally have found these to be worth there weight in gold. They have stoped Miss Cheeky chops from opening cupboards that contain my cleaning products, glassware/crockery and bathroom items.

For those of you who have read my blog or heard of my woes with Miss Cheeky Chops leaving her room at night, I have found another product which also falls under home safety. Door Knob Covers. These are fantastic. They are made from a single piece of plastic which clamps over your existing door knob. The plastic is marked with two red dots which you then squeeze in conjunction with the knob and the door opens. I now have one on the inside of her door, it allows me to enter her room but she cannot leave unless I open the door for her. You may think this is cruel, but until you have a child who constantly gets out of their bed and room it is a god send.

Another thing we do in our kitchen is to use the kill switches that operate our cook top and stove. I have caught Miss Cheeky Chops on countless occasions trying to turn on the oven or trying to reach the knobs on the stove top, if it wasn’t for us using the kill switch I shudder to think what might have happened.

Please remember this is no safety device on the market which can prevent accidents – only common sense and parental supervision.  These are my views and experiences.

Take care and be well, Michelle

door knobs
I got my door knobs from my local Toy World store, but you should be able to order them from other places to.
The knobs are by dream baby. They are quite hard to open as you need to press the red tabs at the same time and twist the handle.

Hope this helps you and good luck with the sleep walking.

Magnetic locks
These things are wonderful as long as the key is kept out of the childs reach they can't get into where you don't want them to be. I love them.

We have a designated spot for the key - one on the towel rail in the bathroom and the second one high up on the fridge.

Great advice
great advice... I have those electrical plug covers too... She tries to touch them but thankfully they are on there so that she can't shock herself. As for our coffee table, I am thank that when we bought it it has round edges so if she hits it, it won't hurt her and she has hit them.. Just the thing I hate is when she crawls under it and sometimes hits her head on the metal legs but she just keeps crawling and goes another way.. We even have a baby gate and I hve to figure out how to put it on the stairs.. there is no way it's going to fit.. :(
