Tips for baby bag

wildrose by wildrose Young Parent(May 2006) (rank 19th)
Some probably have done this, but if you have not I'd like to share what we need in our baby bag.

Since I have 2 kids, sometimes you forget things. So, I decided to include the things below in my baby bag (I prefer bag pack, I bought a kid's
back pack size W28cmxH34cmxD11cm):

- 3 nappies;
- Baby wipes travel pack;
- 1 set baby change cloth;
- 1 set of other child cloth (include underpant);
- Towel (small size, let's say 39x55cm, sort of hand dryer towel);
- Small beauty pack which include: sun screen, nappy rash cream, antiseptic cream, bonjela, moisturising lotion, band aid, thermometer, kids panadol, liquid soap in small container

I bought this all in one antiseptic cream which is for cuts, bites, stings, itches, sunburn, minor burns called Paraderm Plus.

I share this cause when you are going out with kids, you will expect the unexpected. I had twice that my son wet his clothes when he fell off to the pond and the other time wet and dirty when he slid on the wet slide. Or, when my daughter had a leaking nappy. So, to cut story short, accident might happen.

Apart from that, I also put one extra beach towel, one blanket, one sun screen in my car.

Also when travelling in the car with kids, don't forget to bring some snack and drink for them.

baby bag
I always keep a little rubbermaid with some formula in it and a bottle of water in my bag, and one of those little one serving apple sauces in my bag, cuz you just never know when baby will suddenly be hungry, or you're going to be visiting someone and decide to stay for supper! I also keep a can of formula in my car, along with diapers and a pack of wipes and a clean bottle. I tend to be scattered, so occasionally I'll leave the house and forget the diaper bag LOL.

I actually put more than 3 diaper's in her bag. Just incase she needs to be changed a little more. I even have a bib in there for when im feeding her, so that it dont get all over her clothes.

I would add a little water

Quite a few times I made good use of a small bottle of water, working as a busy nanny:

- when another toddler threw sand in 2yo C's eyes - quick wash-out without having to bring all the other kids to where there was a faucet
- when 2yo L ate a popsicle and had it all over his hands, mixed with dirt and sand - no baby wipes would get that out and he was SO mad
- when 16mo T fell on his chin and had a little cut on his lip, blood mixed with grass. Blessed be the water that washed it off so I could see that it wasn't so serious.
- a little thirst here, a little hunger there, minor scraps, refreshing for hot weather... it doesn't matter if I am only going around the block, I always have my bottle of water. :o)

A little different for young babies.

I agree with what you've written. I have pretty much the same content for my 14 month old son, more or less.   But I think for newborns up to 6-8 months,  the diaper bag is a little fuller. Definitely more diapers, and a couple of change of clothes.

Re: A little different for young babies.
Well again, I suppose every baby are different. That bag I prepare for short trip, such as go to shop or park. If I go for a day, I would bring more stuff. As we know live with young souls everything should be extra...extra...extra. Even sometime, I pack one nappy and small travel baby wipes in my own bag, just in case I forgot to bring the baby bag.

We're Overprepared
Your article makes me think we need to reassess our baby bag. Actually we have two, one for each of us. My wife outfitted both and in mine she has 20 or so diapers, a full box of wipes, about 20 burp cloths, 2 outfits, a changing mat, two blankets, a pair of socks, a hat, butt paste, about forty zip-lock baggies, usually 2-3 bottles... there is more but I will spare you.

This is my baby bag and the farthest I've travelled with Esmee in the last month, on my own, is about eight blocks from our house. I guess it is best to be prepared for anything... even if the bag weighs more than a bowling ball.

Re: We're Overprepared

Your comment made me laugh, but it's not an insult, believe me. I was going to say that you will learn that your bag may be a little overloaded, but I think you've already figured that out.  I suggest bringing more than 3 diapers, but definitely not 20. In my experience, I travelled with 4-5 diapers and I have yet to use them all on one trip. Newborns will use up more diapers because they are more likely to leak out.

As you take your little bundle of joy out more and more, you'll be revising the contents of your diaper bag. In general, your bag will get lighter as your baby grows.

Re: We're Overprepared
Don't worry, I laughed too - especially when I realized exactly how NOVICE I really am. That's ok, we are learning a lot more every day (especially with all of the great info. here).

My wife is a rather zealous planner. I love that about her, but when I hefted my baby bag the first time I think my eyes widened and she said "What?"

After I read this article I went and emptied out my baby bag. Have you ever seen those documentaries of the teams that are preparing to scale Mt. Everest? They always lay out all of their gear and provisions to itemize before they decamp and head up the mountain. With all of the stuff Catherine had packed in there, and with all of it laid out on our dining room table, I felt like I was being prepared for a baby expedition.

Re: We're Overprepared

You guys are so cute! It reminds me of us when we had our first baby!  That's why they make the strollers so convenient to put the diaper bag on the handle because you'll break your back if you carry it around!

The other hint is to have a few diapers in the car in case those 3-4 diapers aren't enough.  I always had an extra onesie in the bag because our girls ALWAYS had a blowout (lots of poopie) when we were out!

Things get a little lighter when they are potty trained...something to look forward to in 2 years! It will go by fast!

Re: We're Overprepared
Yeah, that's a really good idea. Rachel also posted about her stash of supplies kept in the car. We could put a small box in each car with all of the essentials. That way we always have backup and no matter which car is being driven you know you are good to go!

I secretly love all of this planning, preparing and organizing too. I was just visiting friends who have two girls (18 months and 2 years) and we talked for an hour and a half about baby bags and their advice on what works and what doesn't.

Box of goodies in the boot
I have a plastic box in the boot full of the following - tissue box, baby wipes, plastic travel change mat, nappy bags, jumper, spray on sunscreen, bib, spare top, pants and socks, a spare toy, nappies, fold up picnic water proof matt and shopping bag.

Re: Box of goodies in the boot
Yeah...pretty much the same. With my 4 years old and 1 year old...my car is like mobile home. You'll find toys, spare hats, jackets, etc..etc... Even we give our son mp3 player so he can listen to his own music, specially when the young one cry in the car. And I also put extra ventolin spray (asthma spray) in my baby bag, just in case my  husband always forget to bring his.

Travel a bit heavier

Good stuff, we travel with a little more in our bag, we carry more diapers (he always seems to go through more on the road than at home), we also carry one more set of clothes than you do. And since we're bottle feeding him breastmilk, we've usually got one or two feedings in there with an extra nipple so he can eat.
