Illegal Drugs and teens...Marijuana...Ecstasy...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 3rd)
Hi there...... Your teen is at a party..... Someone is jumping all around and having a ball full of energy...... Someone walks up to your teen and says here try these they can make you feel like that......Pointing to the person who is dancing away with unlimited energy.... What are these
pills and what can they do to your teen.......

I am 33 nearly 34 and in my teen years the talked about drug was speed...... Alot of my friends used it.

My Mum is 59  nearly 60 and her era had  marijuana...... Alot of her friends used it....

The drug of this era seems to be these party pills........  It is commonly known around teens in our area as pilling....... They love doing it it makes them feel great an enourmaous burst of energy a wonderful feeling of elation.......

Teenagers will try things as they grow and start to learn about life. We all did it as our parents slowly let the aapron strings a little longer bit by bit.... Some of us tried tobacco some alcohol some marijuana and some of us went on to experiement further with drugs....

We can try to hide these street drugs from our kids but alas we can not do it. If we stop them from going to parties and dances they will stay at a friends house and take them there. Not all teens will do these or even think of trying them but I thought if I wrote something on them and the side effects then you could maybe see the signs of if your teens could be using them.

Okay to start with I will talk about   cannabis
  • Marijuana is the most common illegal drug used these days and has been for a long time.
  • Marijuana is the chopped up form of cannabis and is smoked in a pipe(bong) or a rolled cigarette form.
  • Hashish is dried cannibis resin and usually comes in blocks. People usually do baking with this hence hash cookies but can also be smoked
  • Some of the street names for this drug are  "Grass", "pot", "hash", "weed", "reefer", "dope", "herb", "mull", "buddha", "ganja", "joint", "stick", "buckets", "cones", "skunk", "hydro", "yarndi", "smoke", "hooch"
This drug is a depressant and has all over effects. The usual tell tale signs of marijuana use is glassy eyes and slow movement and speech along with laughing and paranoia about everything. It has a sweet sickly smell to it.  This drug can also give relaxation but with that also a loss of inhaitions and make you very hungry commonly known as the "munchies"

This is a part from The drug info clearing house I have cut and pasted to show you the big concern of this drug.

  • It is believed that cannabis use—especially if heavy and regular—may be linked to a condition known as a drug-induced psychosis, or "cannabis psychosis". This can last up to a few days. The episodes are often characterised by hallucinations, delusions, memory loss and confusion.
  • There is some evidence that regular cannabis use increases the likelihood of psychotic symptoms occurring in an individual who is vulnerable due to a personal or family history of mental illness. Cannabis also appears to make psychotic symptoms worse for those with schizophrenia and lowers the chances of recovery from a psychotic episode.
If you think your child may be doing this drug ask.... and give them the full details of this drug there are many good sites on the net for this along with many great pamphlets at you local mental health clinic..

Next drug to talk about  are commonly know as a party drug it is  Ecstasy

  • This drug was commonly used in nightclubs and rave parties but has slowly spread its wings and is commonly used not only by teens but also research shows professional people into their forties.
  • Ecstasy is (MDMA, methylenedioxymethamphetamine) it comes in alot of forms of tablets these tablets are in different colours and have different nick names some of these are shreks, euros, ying yangs, pac man, sheck2, asto boys, and tweetys  to name a few.
  • Some of the street names for this drug are E, XTC and eccy.
This drug is a stimulant and hallucinogen. It has an energising effect. It can give feelings of emotional warmth, empathy toward others, a general sense of well being and decreased anxiety. BUT as with most drugs it also wears off. Leaving feelings of paranoia and crying and dryness in the mouth.

I have cut and pasted this piece below for you to read as I felt it was really important

Levels of harm

Ecstasy is often made by “backyard chemists”, and tablets sold as ecstasy can contain a variety of amphetamine-related substances that can further increase the risks of taking this drug.

The negative psychological effects of ecstasy include: anxiety, depression, depersonalisation, confusion, hallucinations, flashbacks, aggression, impulsivity, lack of motivation, panic attacks and paranoia.

The physical effects of ecstasy include raised blood pressure, a rise in body temperature, faster heartbeat, skin tingles, sudden sweating and dilated pupils. Some people may also experience unsteadiness, nausea and possibly vomiting, jaw clenching, teeth grinding, muscle aches, stiffness, impairment of motor control, blurred vision, insomnia and fatigue.

The toxic effects of ecstasy that can be fatal are:

  • high body temperature leading to multiple organ failure
  • blood clotting
  • kidney failure.

High body temperature and excessive dancing can cause dehydration so it is important for users to be aware of water consumption. However, excessive water intake can lead to abnormally low body temperature and swelling of the brain.

The long-term risks of taking ecstasy are still not known. Animal studies have shown that ecstasy is a “neurotoxin”, which means it damages brain cells. This may lead to long-term brain damage.

If you suspect you child is taking these talk to them or listen to their friends and them talk you might hear one of the names of these drugs in their convo. The below link is a fantastic link please have a look. I am thinking of writing a few more things like this in the advice section about other drugs and outside influences for our teenagers at a later date but I am just not too sure when. Let me know if this has helped you at all by voting and leaving any helpful comments. Thank you

I have heard many a teenager tell me that these tablets are just fun. Well NO they aren't they are dangerous and a very scarey thing for just about any parent who thinks their child might be using. Keep the lines of communication open with your teen talk to them often about this and other formally taboo subjects. The more they know the less likely they are to try these pills. I can not stress this enough.......

Cheers

Angie

Re: Illegal Drugs and teens...Marijuana...Ecstasy...

So my response to this may not be a popular one.

First of all, I'm 21, which is about as close to being a teenager and being an adult that you can be.  It wasn't long ago at all for me since I was a teenager.  I'm also a TA at a local private Montessori school.    I also am a frequent cannabis user.

While I agree that these drugs are NOT things that any teens should be using, as their brains aren't mature enough yet to handle the chemical or make well thought out decisions,  I saw a lot on here regarding the specific drug that I know for a fact to either be absolutely false or not disclosing all the information.

For example, a bong and a pipe are two different things.   A glass pipe requires no water.  A bong requires water and is usually much bigger and is designed to take the impurities out of the smoke before it's inhaled.  This may seem a petty thing to you, but to your child it only proves how much you DON'T know about the subject.

When I was a child, I went through the drugs and violence program at school.  I ate up everything they had to say to me.  As I began to mature, however, I discovered a great deal of information that they gave me was exactly what I read above.  Either misleading or lacking full disclosure.   As a teenager, that sort of discovery makes you wonder.  How much else are they lying to us about?    This can encourage a teen to run out and try other harder substances, believing that everything they were told was a lie.

I encourage many of you to do your own research on unbiased sites regarding drug use, specifically cannibis.  I think you'll find that the specific drug isn't really as harmful as what this article states.  Being bipolar, with a history of mental illness as well as familial problems I can tell you that I have NEVER experienced any sort of psychotic symptoms associated with my marijuana use.   If anything, for the past two years that I've been using cannibis regularly, in conjunction with my mood stabilizer,  I haven't felt so sane in quite sometime.  It does for me, medicinally, what my mood stabilizer does.  Only better.

Teens are smart.  They lack decision making skills of adults, but they are smart, and they talk.  They will soon find out if the information on these drugs you're giving them is false or if you're mistaken.

My parents were hippies.  They never did any drugs around me but informed me when I was younger that they had and that it was fun.  Because lets face it.  It is.  I've had my negative experiences with a few, but in large...drugs are fun.  Or people wouldn't take them.  However, they also explained to me that they wouldn't appreciate me trying them until I was at least 18.  And because they were so ridiculously honest with me, I honored their request.   Now, I am a regular pot user.  However, I think without their honesty and supervision, I would have tried it sooner and with more irresponsibility than I did.

Some people may not agree that drug use is okay at any age, but let's face it.  You only have control of your children until they're 18.  Then they make their own choices.  Give them the information they need to keep those choices from destroying them.  Without my parent's support and honesty I would probably be a no good stoner, but that isn't the case.   I work 35 hours a week with children and I would never do drugs before or during work.   I sing with a choir, and am going to college.  I am a great example of how cannibis use will not destroy your child's life.

I also encourage you to do a little research as to WHY cannibis was made illegal in the first place.  It was done more for political reasons than for any concern for American citizens.   It is nearly impossible to become PHYSICALLY addicted to the stuff, which is more than I can say for alcohol, though it can be mentally addictive for those who have addictive personalities.   It will not give you liver problems.  I have never found any information on anyone overdosing or dying from cannibis use.

Truthfully, your kid could be getting into things much worse than cannibis.   And a few of those things that are worse are actually *gasp* legal!   If  your child is doing acid, extacy, pcp, speed, coke or crack, I'd be concerned.   These can have instant and long term consequences that at their age, they would not be able to handle.   The info I saw for extasy on this article was about spot on.  Personally, I would never try the stuff.  It's not regulated or natural so it could be cut with all sorts of nasty things.  Marijuana however, can only really be laced with PCP without the buyer noticing.

Choose your battles parents.

Re: Illegal Drugs and teens...Marijuana...Ecstasy...

OK I have read with interest and consideration everything you have said but it still does not stop me from wanting my kids not to do drugs even marijuana! I don't want them destroying there bodies with alcohol or cigerettes either. If you have made that choice even knowing all the risks and all the facts then that is fine. You can have your opinion that it is doing you no harm. It may not destroy your liver but it has to have some effect on your lungs. My son is 17 and he knows my views. Of course that does not stop him from wanting to make his own choices. I can't control all that he does when he is not under my roof but I feel as a mother you can never stop wanting the best of health for your children. There are many articles on drugs on the net so go for your life and keep researching. If you can give us some tips on how to stop our teens from becoming dependent on drugs I would love to hear it because sorry I don't want my children being dependent on anything. It is such a waste of money too. It is getting harder to make our money stretch these days and I would love to see them using it to travel the world or get themselves set up. I know I don't sound too much fun but I will not just give up on them and be happy with that.

Re: Illegal Drugs and teens...Marijuana...Ecstasy...

I understand that completely.   Yes, it is said that one joint contains more carcinogens than an entire pack of ciggarettes.  The only difference is that with weed, you'd be kind of silly to smoke the whole joint.   It takes maybe 3 or 4 puffs for me to get to the place I want to be and that's with the tolerance I've built up for the stuff.

It is(or should be) every parent's wish to see their child healthy and happy and I wouldn't hold it against you for not wanting your 17 year old son to do that mess.   I wouldn't either.  Like I said, his brain isn't mature enough for it yet.  Because it's illegal, there haven't been a whole lot of really unbiased studies on the stuff, but I'm thinking anything with hallucinogenic qualities(which pot does have) could be detrimental to a growing brain.  The only trouble is, I really dislike seeing marijuana put on a par with Extasy.   That stuff can kill you the first time.  I also dislike seeing it treated as worse than alcohol because I have a family full of alcoholics and it hurts them so much worse than if they were smoking.

To boot, and this is what I thought of when you made mention of wanting your son to be healthy.   Weed has helped me so much with my Bipolar disorder.   Before I started, even with my mood stabilizer I would have been extremely upset at the slightest thing.  Now, even when I'm not high (which is the majority of the time) I'm really mellow and calm and can be rational.  I feel better.

But totally, don't let your 17 year old smoke.   I suppose I'm just sick and tired of watching children be filled up with incorrect information so as to perpetuate what seems to me a useless prejudice.   I kind of feel like that's the reason it's still illegal.  All the kids who actually listened what the drug and violence officers had to say in school are voting.   Bah....but I'll stay off politics.

Re: Illegal Drugs and teens...Marijuana...Ecstasy...

Thanks for replying. I do understand what you are saying. I have alcoholics in my family and I was married to one. It's one thing to say don't let your 17 year old smoke, but another for him to listen and accept that! LOL Life isn't that idealistic but he respects my rules in my home and around me. I don't know if Angie is putting marijuana in the same category as ecstasy I think her main point is to talk to your teens about it and find all you can about it so that you are informed when you talk to them. I know my sons views, we have talked about it. Unfortunately a lot of people view it as a soft drug with no side effects. I could go on and on but it is just obvious we have different views but I respect your opinion, I know a lot of people that do smoke it and they are leading normal lives it just isn't for me. On this site we are sharing advice on parenting so the advice is actually from peoples own experiences.

Re: Illegal Drugs and teens...Marijuana...Ecstasy...

Thanks for your comment and I respect your opinion on this hey....But here is my opinion...My son recently has turned back to marijuana use...Recently i picked him up from a party and he was really quiet crazy...He was abusing me and the strength he had in him was scary....He got angry and started to peel away 6ft fence palings...He was just stoned....You may be one of the lucky ones...I have a friend whos son is in and out of mental health hospital because from his marijuana use he is now all the time psychotic....I too have used weed and know what you are saying but everyone is different....I will never condone its use to any of my children but I will make sure they know all the possible dangers of it....I know the difference between a bong a glass pipe a brass pipe even as a younger user I smoked it through a can with holes poked in it or even a bucket bong...I am not claiming to be innocent in my experimentation at all...Nor am I claiming to know it all....All i want is to inform others of the basic facts of its use....You say that there is no deaths caused by marijuana....My husband may disagree with you there as he watched one of his mates spin into being a total pot head after becoming psychogically addicted to this stuff and actually tried to revive him from a bath tub after he was that stoned he took his own life...Pot may not have been the full factor of him slitting his wrists and hoping in that bath....But I am sure being under the influence didnt help with his depression....Just my thoughts and opinions on this...Oh and lastly I am in no way comparing these two drugs as being on the same par...They both scare me....E a little more that pot...You have a great day and thanks for your comments....

cheers

Angie

Re: Illegal Drugs and teens...Marijuana...Ecstasy...

As a teenager, i have seen and heard of a lot of drugs that are available throughout not only home use but also at parties and other events. It is sad to see that all teenagers are going to be offered some kind of drug in their lives and that the majority of them will say yes and they will take them. i never have agreed with any kind of drugs, because i have seen the affects that it has on people. it takes somones life by the handles and tips it upside down. i think the important question that we have to ask ourselves is, are our parents using the right psychology. Although i have never done drugs and i am not a parent, i have noticed that parents can be overprotective when it comes down to talking to their kids about drugs. As some parents will notice, sometimes you tell you what oppinion you have on things and your chld wil go against what you have said. i think it is important to tell your children what drugs there are out there, what affects they can have on people and not to take them when they are offered to you, but keeping them indoors as much as possible and trying to keep them away from the temptations that are out there will only make them more anxious to experiment and try drugs. also the more you mention drugs the more it becomes interesting, so after you have had a discussion with your children about drugs try not to bring the topic up so much. It is important to know that know matter how much you tell your children about drugs and how they should avoid them, it is your child descision wheather or not to take them or not, not the parents. The best thing parents can do is prepare their children, becuase when it comes time, it is the childs choice. it depends on how much inner strength your child has to say NO!

Re: Illegal Drugs and teens...Marijuana...Ecstasy...
I think that Ecstasy is on the rise with teens--as well as prescription drugs.  As the mom of teens, I am aware and worried about these potential risks.  I read an article recently that I found to be very interesting and I thought I would share it, http://www.connectwithkids.com/tipsheet/2006/264_jan18/ecstasy.html.  This was written by a company called Connect with Kids, www.connectwithkids.com.  They produce programs that are reality-based and feature real kids discussing real issues.  All of the programs have one focus; to improve the lives of children and the help parents become better parents.

Re: marijuana

I wish I had a sister like you when I was smoking and dealing.

One thing I did find out though was when I gave it all up I suddenly had no friends. The funny part though is that gave me a chance to meet people outside that fatal circle.

The second best decission I ever made.

drugs in your own backyard
too many of my friends dont drink on our nightclubbing nights anymore they get into th bickies(pills) and ping off their faces all night, none of them see a prob with it they can stay up all night and go to work the next day and continue their weekend with no effect as far as they can see, the  thing is these are my friends that are not low income most of them had their first homes by 21 they work good jobs they have great social lives and are close to their families, no one will ever know because on the outside these look like perfect ppl and i look like the screwup even tho i dont do drugs im a low income single parent .  the saddest thing that i know for certain though is that even though these are smart ppl who know the risks one will have to die for the rest to stop and it breaks my heart.

Re: drugs in your own backyard

This is an expensive price to pay and makes one so sad that you are so true.

No matter what they do in life they are still someones children, friend, partner etc...someone will shed a tear for the loss.

Now this may seem harsh but if that persons life means that they save the rest of the friends then was it a waste...I don't know, just asking the Question.

drugs
You have done it again. Great piece. It is amazing how acceptable marijuana is now. It is really hard to get our kids to see that it is a bad thing if a lot of their friends parents use it all the time. Plus a lot of these teen movies have teens using it as if it is the norm to do. I feel I am up against a lot of competition in keeping them away from this drug. I know a lot of people that think it is a soft drug and want it legalised. It is a health issue for me as I don't even want people smoking cigerettes around my children. I want them to respect there bodies and play sport and not waste money etc.
Anyway I can go on forever about what I want! What was it you said about the jelly? Ha ha

Yes we have been blinded by the social acceptability of pot.

people have got to get with the times to detect
any sort of effects from drugs, these articles are great Angie, i know i have already commented below, but i just wanted to inform everyone that my 16 year old sisters friend has just overdosed on Ecstasy and ICE, she is ok now but i wonder how she started doing it after knowing her brothers are still on the crap and they are just withering away.

The mother wants to blame her cousin for introducing it to her, but its not the cousins fault, its hers for being a follower (another victim of peer group pressure). People have got to understand that all you need is one pill or snort or whatsoever to OD, this girl is lucky she called the ambulance on her friend who was O.D.ing first before hitting the floor, fitting and throwing up, because if she didn't she would be dead by now.

my b/f's brother has been amitted to the psychiatric ward through smoking Marijuanna causing drug induced psycosis, he is out now but man, paranoid as hell, he thinks everybody is talking behind his back, stealing his things, and thinks his own family is picking on him.  i really hope he quits and gets better soon.

xx channy

Not harmful - yeah sure!

I've heard many people of all ages comment that marajuana isn't bad for you, or at least it's not as bad as tobacco, and isn't addictive. Bolloks!  I'll write more on that later.  I haven't time to go into it now.

Well Done

Great article...........

Thankfully my communication lines are open with my teenager, and she has told me of what a lot of teenagers get upto on the weekends  and not all of it is drug related.

I can't even get my girl to take a panadol for pain relief let alone her taking any other drug, so I'm grateful I  have nothing to worry about........yet
