Baby Proofing

Marlena by Marlena Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 12th)

Here are some ways you can baby proof you house so that baby is safe:

  • Take sharp edges off of tables, http://www99.epinions.com/kifm-Safety-Household_Precautions-All-Edge_and_Corner_Guards
  • Turn the water heater to 120.
  • Get childproof locks for your cabinets, and hide your house hold cleaners in there.
  • Cover all
the electric sockets with safety plugs
  • Feep your hot drinks away from baby, they can grab it in a second.  Dont drink hot drinks while breast feeding you could have an accedent and spill on baby.
  • make sure your baby monitor works at all times so you can hear baby.
  • Make sure 911, poison control and your spouce at work number is proggramed into your phone.  Let your babysitter know they are there.
  • Put a hook and eye latch high up on the door so you can stop a child from opening the door and going into the street.
  • Dont smoke around of your children.  We all know what second hand does to you.
  • Keep older brother or sisters toys seperate because there toys may have little piece that tehy could choke on.
  • Remove magnets from fridge because they couse also be a choking hazard if they fall off.
  • Make sure you have a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector in all parts of teh house.  You can ask your fire department for help if needed.
  • Never leave baby alone in the tub, they can drown in an inch of water or if you have a pool.
  • If all else fails get down on your knees and look around to see what your baby sees and move anything that looks dangerous
  • You can also hire a professional baby proofer if it will make you feel better.

Hope this helps you out when you need to baby proofing.  Even if it isn't your first baby make a list and check it twice (hehe)  You might of forgot from the last one.

One more

One more thing - if you have stairs, put gates across both the bottom and the top of the stairs to prevent baby crawling up and having a nasty fall.

Expensive but worth it
I was just tonight looking for latches for toilets and cabinets, etc. They are pretty darn expensive .... but worth the safety and life of my child .... I was looking for latches and things for the toilets (so baby won't drown), for cabinets and drawers (so baby won't get kninves, etc. ) .... I already have the power outlets covered but now have concerns with drawers and toilets (had not thought of baby drowning in the toilet before) ..... so much to think about ! But love my boy bunches !

Wow I didn't know there was a lock for the towlet.  I am parenoid of the towlet.  I have the bathroom door closed at night.  I dotn close my sons door at night because he is scared so I put a gate up so he cant go to the kitchen and living room.  I closed the bathroom door and he only can come to our room.  Now I can go see if I can find a lock for the towlet.  Thanks for the info.
