Telling children the truth

Anonymous Author (January 2007)

I know you have to always tell your children the truth, but sometimes we have to fantasise a little especially when it come's to Santa, the Easter Bunny etc. They ask us, ' why did you lie to us about Santa mum', and i would say, i didn't really lie

to you, i just fantasised for you. He was a real person a long long time ago etc and so was the easter bunny. I don't like lieing to anyone especially children, but i think they have to know the difference sometimes of reality, and fantasy.

I'm sorry if this has been done before.

santa and the easter bunny
Hi
I teach my children Santa is real until YOU stop believing
They are also taught not to tell other children that Santa is not real because in the thick and thin of it all...Whos to say what is real and what isn't
Peachynowamum has the right to her way of voting just as we all do
Yes it is fantastic that she stood behind her vote and commented as to why
After all that is what Minti is supposed to be about....
Lots of people with different opinions.
A lot of articles that are written with anonymous as the author i tend not to even vote on as why hide behind anon.  Why can't they add their name to it or are they scared of being voted low as they don't think it is good enough.
I believe the anon should be taken away permanently.
Whether this is or isnt great ADVICE is up to the voter and commenter....
My thoughts
Luv Deb

My thoughts

I call all that kind of "kid-stuff" magic. When my daughter has asked me if Santa is real, I just comment that some people believe and others don't but that I myself love to believe in magic and that makes her want to believe as well. She doesn't question things like that anymore. She'll just say things in passing like, "Magic is so cool" and it makes me giddy. I love encouraging fun and fantasy in my kids.

Just wanted to share my approach.

The truth is not always a good thing.....
See I don't think the 'truth' is always a good thing.....I believe that there are times when we have to stretch the truth, avoid the truth and sugar coat the truth. I believe that sometimes the truth isn't all that it is cracked up to be. Explaining death to a child, cremation, hate, war, the list could go on....

I believe in being honest, I believe in being truthful until it hurts someone beyond helping. I also think there is an age and time for some truths. Somethings should be left until a child is older and can comprehend what you are saying......

Fantasies...
Isn't that what childhood is all about?  Hopes, dreams, imagination, joy?  If we can't enjoy it as children, what kind of mean grumpy adults would we be?  No, I don't believe in lying, and yes, this has come up in the past few days.  Has anyone ever proved irrevocably that the Easter Bunny and Santa don't exist?  The world is harsh enough, why not have a few warm fuzzy corners to hide in!

You should always feel free to voice your opinion, whether it has been shared or not, that's what this is all about (I think, I am new, but who cares).

Who'd have ever thought we'd all be on computers discussing such things 50years ago???  Maybe only Santa and the Easter Bunny would have believed it...

I notice that this article has been voted down and I am unsure why as nobody has decided to say why they voted it down. I believe it is advice, it is over 50 words, it is someones experience with their children and I personally do exactly the same thing. First time parents may find this helpful. So I am curious as to why it has been voted down.

One thing I had drummed into my head last year while studying was....'keep it simple'. Well ok, considering when you look at the volume of what I write that hasn't really been drummed in enough....but it is a good policy to write by.

Not everything has to be 'over explained'. I have a problem with repeating myself in different ways when I write, I write differently, I don't say things the same way... I also find it hard to write short things....and I truly believe those who can say something in less words have a more talent at times.....

So on that note....'Go The Small Articles' they rock too.....

(and I still couldn't write that in 50 words LOL)

119 words and still counting....lol

i just saw this advice for the first time today and yes i voted it down...
but that is because I don't believe a child does understand the difference between fantasy and reality and besides however you word it, it is still lying to your children and i don't agree with it...

however each to their own... it is just not the advice i would give...
i am sry if I have offended anyone
