Getting baby to take a bottle

rockclimbr4400 by rockclimbr4400 Talking(January 2007) (rank 500+)
First of all I just want to say that breast is best, but unforunately after breastfeeing for 2 months I was only able to feed on one side my baby was not getting near enough to eat and was colicy until we switched her to formula. At first I felt like
a failure, but don't feel this way! Our baby is so much better on formula. So if you have to switch here are a few suggestions.
1. Pick the right formula. If your baby has milk intolerance or is a premie you may want to look into a formula that is designed with her special needs in mind. I love similac formula. Our baby does great on their product.
2. Pick a bottle that is like breast when switching from breastfeeding. Once you find a bottle you and your baby like buy enough so that  you are not stressing over washing bottles all the time. I like soothie bottles, but it is up to you. The nipples are fat and to me resemble the breast a lot.
3. Pick the feeding baby is least interested in and feed her a little early, say 30 minutes. If baby is starving and frantic she will not take the bottle as easy.
4. Let someone else feed baby the bottle. If you do it, baby may smell your milk and not take it as easily. I always even left the room when my husband feed her from a bottle at first.
5. Start with one feeding (for your babies sake and your own), and work your way up. You might start with substituting one bottle a day for a few days and then two bottles for a few days and so on and so forth. That way your baby has time to get used to the idea and so do your breasts. If you go cold turkey baby can be cranky and your breasts will be sore.
6. If you are going back to work and are substituting formula be sure to give baby the bottle for the same feedings she will be missing when you are at work.
7. And finally be patient. This is a process it may take time. Remember, this is new to baby and make take some getting used to. Good luck!!

breast might be the best sometimes
i've noticed that in minti can't remember who's said it, but there's a few more people saying now that they're switching from the breast to formula as their baby isn't getting enough milk etc from the breast milk their receiveing. But i couldn't breast feed as nothing came out of mine, so i had formula.

Thank you for the post there was some great information in this and stuff that is going to help a lot of mothers......but I have to disagree with you on one thing....Breast is not always the best. I could not stand breastfeeding. I hated it so much. I didn't feel the connection with my child or any of the 'love' stories so many people flog me with. I was put through more stress trying to please those who badgered me with this that it just made it worst.

Not all mothers are able to breast feed and not all babies are able to. Some babies do not thrive on breast milk either and are better on formula. This is an extremely personal preference and although I do think whole heartedly that mothers who breastfeed are lucky and damn right incredible people to do it, I think that it is something which needs to have more focus on what is good for both mum and bubs.

I do enjoy reading articles like this, however, I always feel a little like a failure for not enjoying breastfeeding when I see the 'breast is best' comments. Mind you this is a problem I have to get over and deal with, but there are many like me and all who know that breast is only best when it suits both mum and baby....

Anyways well done, like I said you gave some good and helpful advice....thanks

According to doctors breast is best, but I agree with you, some babies, mine included, do not do well on breast milk. Our baby and I, were miserable, but things are much better now. She has less gas, less spit up, sleeps better. And so I sleep better and am happier too. Besides breastfeeding didn't really work for me or her either. I tried it basically b/c my husband wanted me to and b/c it was supposed to be better for her and more cost effective. But her being happy and sleeping better and her tummy feeling better and the fact that she has no colic whatsoever since I switched to formula, it is well worth the extra cost. I would pay any cost to make my baby feel better and sleep better. No one should feel guilty for formula feeding. It is like adults choosing to eat meat or not. It is a personal choice and all parents are entitled to make it for their baby. Thanks for the feed back, it was nice to talk to someone else who breastfeeding didn't work for either, b/c at first I was feeling a bit down.
