ID Cards and wristbands for children ..

moondust by moondust Speaking(January 2007) (rank 500+)
As a parent of 2 small children I am constantly worried about going to large events with them and the possibility of them wandering off from me or being lured away by a stranger. Or even while they are out and about with school or at a friends house or daycare.

As I waited for the lift at a large shopping centre here in Sydney about 3 years ago, a small child, about the same age as my daughter (around 5 years old) exited the lift on her own. There was NO-ONE else in the lift with her. She was crying uncontrollably looking for her mother. I was devastated not only for the child but for the poor mother, wondering how she must be feeling at this exact moment. I took the child to the information desk, but she was unable to give her name as she was too distraught. All they could do was make an announcement over the loud speaker, which would have been difficult to hear because of all the other background noise.

It was on my way home in the car that I thought "There has to be a better solution." I knew that child emergency identification cards existed in the USA, but hadn't seen too many here in Australia. So the idea of "ID Your Child" was born.

As a parent I feel that our first priority is to the safety and well being of our children. We take more time micro chipping our pets and making sure that luggage is properly labelled, and having the contents of our homes insured. We need to protect our children - they are our most precious gifts.

ID YOUR CHILD is committed to helping parents keep their children safe. We produce professional, high quality, pvc credit card size ID cards for parents and caregivers to carry with them, these cards contain all necessary VITAL information required to assist the authorities in finding your child FAST in the event that he/she is lost or abducted, or in an medical emergency or accident where you are unable speak for them.

ID cards
There was some advice a while back about placing ID cards in the childs car seat also.  Just in case you are in an accident and you cant communicate.  It has there name age alergies and a contact number.  i thought that was a really good Idea, and so is yours.  I just have to get around to making up a bunch of cards for my son.

not just for children
There is a website:  www.roadid.com  that has ID's for adults too!  My husband and I both have one for when we are cycling as neither of us bring a wallet or picture ID with us when cycling.  I am going to get one for Alexa's bike trailer this summer so her information is handy too!
It is a great product for if you are out exercising and something happens, then people will be able to look at the information and get you help.

not just for children
Hi mommyofone I actually have an affiliate program with Road Id - and I got DH one of their wristbands for Christmas this year. He rides his bike most weekends and is gone for hours at a time. I'll also be making a card for him soon. Thanks for your comments. All the best.

Good idea.

I also worry, that my son will run off, especially when he gets a bit older, as already has a mind of his own at 19 months. The other day I saw a fantastic product, in the supermarket, which I had to buy !

They are called "Kid's ID wrist bands", there are 15 single use bands in a pack.  You write the child's details inside the band & on the outside, they have info for the child, (if they can read), & little drawings explaining for them not to panic & a picture of a Policeman for them to go up to, to ask for help.

I like this idea of a wristband, as opposed to a card (I suppose it's a matter of personal choice), but knowing my 'ferral', he'd probably pick up the ID card & throw it away! At least this way, it will be difficult for him to rip it off! Thanks for your advice too! Regards, Robyn.

Hi Robyn The wristbands I have are very similar to the ones you saw in the supermarket (was it Woolworths ?). But I think mine might have space for more information on the back. We just can't be too careful. The cards I have are meant for the parent to carry with them in case the child runs off, they can then show it to the appropriate people to facilitate the safe return. I usually don't recommend children carry the card until they are a bit older and more responsible, because they are likely to do just as you say - throw it away or lose it! LOL! Thanks for your comments.

Hi Moondust, Sorry i must have been 'away with the fairies' when I replied. The cards you are talking about, are a good idea for the parents. I had a mental blank, but now remember we did a similar thing with my Grandpa, who had Dementia & kept wandering off!! And, yes, I think it was Woolies where I got the wristbands from.

Well I think if you put one in there jacket pockets or a back pack if they have it on would be good.  If I came across a lost kid I would try to find any information I could to get that child back to there parents.

child chipping
I like the micro chipping child idea, simply as a method of tracking them if they were taken by a sicko.........Hopefully the police would be able to then track the child before harm was inflicted.Just a thought.Good article regards Merle

Thanks for your vote and comments Merle. Micro chipping is something to think about. It's a bit futuristic for me at the moment. But then again, we micro chip pets to keep them safe and returned to us if they get lost .... Have a great day.

I just think we do it to keep our pets safe, why not our kids.I just become so emotional when I hear of kids getting abducted and we cannot find them for years the agony they must endure during their time of torment is such a horrific thing to contemplate. What their parents also have to endure is just so gut wrenching. If a little chip could solve this ever increasing problem then I am all for it.
