My 4yr old needs to get a blood test done. They got the needle in and the nurse moved it and it hurt him. I asked if they could give him a relaxant doc said will have to tie him to the bed. WILL NOT DO THAT!!!!! Any one
got any suggestions? Here are a few tips on how to go about it.
1) Explain to your child what a blood test is.
2) Explain why it is so important for your child to have the test.
3) It is harder to take blood from children than it is from adults as children have very small veins that can be hard to find so I always reccomend not letting the nurse, doctor or patholigist try more than five times.
4) The butterfly clip has always worked for my daughter but quite often the syringe never did and it just frightened her where the butterfly clip dosn't.
5) Listen to your child. My daughter would get hysterical if she couldn't watch what was being done to her. If she was allowed to watch she was ok with it.
6) If you find that the nurse, doctor or pathologist is having trouble then take your child away and try again another day with someone different. I used to travel 500km to go to a nurse who never had problems getting the blood out of Brielle.
Every child is different so these things may not work for everyone but they worked for Brielle so I hope it does help someone.
It is really hard to have to take your child to have a blood test. I know I ahd to do it sometimes two, three times a week from when my daughter was six months old. She is now eight and dosn't have to have them very often but it is still very hard any time I have to take her.
