Teaching Children Charity

MelodyS by MelodyS Talking(January 2007) (rank 210th)

Teaching my boys about charity, giving to and doing for others, is a valuable lesson for both the children and myself.  My boys are giving, compassionate little humans and I like to think the lesson of charity has been well learned.  That having been said, I realize charity is a lesson that cannot be taught too frequently, and our family will be working diligently in this area for 2007.

Keep in mind that children easily relate to other children who are needy and hurting.  Involving children in charitable activities that help other children may be the best way to instill an attitude of giving.  Even very small children are capable of participating in giving to charity.  A child can chose one of their toys or a clothing item (in excellent condition) to donate to a child who has less than they.  When you take the children grocery shopping, ask each child to pick out an extra item or two to donate to a local food bank.  Older children can give a percentage of allowance to charity.

If you and your children cannot give financially to a charity, give your time or knowledge. In my view time is much more valuable than money.   Visit the external link below for excellent charitable ideas whether you have fifteen minutes, a few hours or a few days to donate.  I plan to use several of the suggestions.  Charity should be a regular family ritual whether you volunteer at the local homeless shelter or mow your elder neighbor's lawn.  Children learn best by example.

In the words of a very bright eight year old, "Mom we have so much good crap, it would be wrong not to give stuff to people who need it."   The holiday season has passed but the needs of others continue throughout the year, and so we must continue to give and to teach our children to give.

How do you teach your children charity?
