Should your child go to day care?

Marlena by Marlena Talking Back(January 2007) (rank 40th)

Sometimes parents send there children to Day Care when they probably shouldn't.  It is really important for your child and the other children in day care to keep your child at home when they are sick.  How can you tell if they should  stay home?  Here are some things to look out for before you send them on there way.

  • Frequent, watery, mucousy, and sometime bloody diarrhea.
  • Sore throat with a fever.
  • Red eyes and eye drainage, usually pink eye.
  • Snot (sorry couldn't think of a better word)  that is thicker, yellow, and green, especially if accompanied by a fever, and an earache

Most colds are contagious 2 days before they start showing any symptoms.  So because of this we need to teach are children to cover there mouths when they cough at all times and use a tissue for there nose.

Snot that is clear is a sign that it is ok for your child to go to day care.  Most times there nose is running clear due to allergies.

Most colds end with a lingering cough.  It keeps your child awake at night, but  dont worry it wont hurt the other child.  You can send them off the others will be fine.

I hope this helps you out the next time you are trying to figure out if your shild is ok for Day Care or not.

Don't I know it...
Mamabear is so right... It is amazing how many parents say just give the kid tylonol, s/he will be fine.. When you know they are crook as dogs.. Poor little things. Then you have the other parents who complain their kid gets sick, but at the same time they still bring their kids too.. We have one mother whom we rang, her child had a really nasty cough, and a temp of 40 degrees and did not seem to be cooling down and she was practically screaming for her mum.... Anyway we rang her and she said "Do I have to come get her."  I personally would have been there in a flash.. But hey that is just me.

That's exactly right I would want to be by my child's side even if there was nothing more I could do but just be there. I had a phone call from the director of my daughter's centre saying she had a temp of 40 and it was my first week in a new job which is why they put off calling at 38 but after giving panadol and using wet washers and stripping her down to knickers and a singlet it still went up.  I told them I would be there immediately and the director from my daycare had to then step into the room til they found someone to replace me as I left immediately without waiting for a replacement.  What goes on at work is a work issue, they need to deal with the staffing, and the centre won't stop running if I go home one of the days but a temp of 40 can lead to brain damage and the child should go to the hospital at that temp, not be left at childcare!

Keep them home
As a child care worker I have kids brought to daycare sick.  The parents are called and still don't turn up til they finish work.  The child is back the next day, sick, the parents are called, wait til they finish work then come to get the child.  They also use the reason that they can't afford the day off, but as someone else mentioned the child then makes other people sick.  I end up with it, have to have the day off, my child gets it from me as she is at a different daycare, I have to keep her home, next thing you know I've had to take a week off and can't put food on the table cause one mother wouldn't take 1 day off to keep her sick kid home! And I'm talking about a kid with vomiting and high temps, not a clear running nose.  It drives me insane and I feel like taking my bills to the mother to pay them since it was her kid that made me and my family sick.  To me, a good rule of thumb is if they are well within themselves they can attend daycare.

daycare
I absolutely agree with waht you arte saying, there are 2 many parents out there that dont realize that some of us parents have to pay high doc fees, and we not all lucky to be able to have health insurance, or have adoc that bulk bills. But saying that we wouldnt take our child to docs for a commen cold, they just need our TLC.

yeay or nay
I wouldn't send  my child to school or day care if I thought she was too ill(contageous) In the end we just have to make an educated decision on the severity of there illness.Great guide lines to follow regards Merle

Cycle
Yeah I totally understand about the not being able to afford a day off.  But then the other kids get sick and other parents who cant afford have to do the same, it is one big cycle.

Child sick no daycare!
Working in and around schools for a long while it is something you see all the time. Day care I guess would be no different. If your child is sick, you really are better off leaving them at home. This must be so difficult though for parents, single parents who cant afford that day off. So I can understand why children do end up there unwell.

I have a sister who sent her son to school with the suspicion of chicken pox. Her theory behind it, well the school would confirm if he 'really' had it or not.....now that is just a poor excuse and a lazy one. Some parents just don't want the burden of a sick child.....

Good Advice matey!

i always take my child to kindy when she's sick, but she's not really that sick when she goes. bit of a runny nose, or a bit tired and she still goes, but if she;s really sick i don't take her to kindy
