Menstruation after birth

Anonymous Author (January 2007)
Hi all, i was just wondering how long does it take after you have a baby to get your monthly cycle back i had my periods for 51/2 weeks after having olivia she is now 3 months

We all get postpartum bleeding after we give birth. This
isn't considered a period as such and will be heavy and uncomfortable. Think of it as natures way of saying "heres your 9 months all at once".

As for when the peroid returns after giving birth depends on you and your body. Whether your baby is breastfeeding and whether they are on solids. If you are sup feeding with bottles and whether they sleep through the night.

Some people get their normal period after a few weeks. Others it can take months and sometimes years. It depends on a few factors.

BREASTFEEDING
Breastfeeding supresses your period. Some people have no period at all while they are feeding. Some get it once the baby sleeps through the night or goes onto solid food. Once you get your first period they can also be very irregular while you breast feed. This is very normal.
One thing i would like to chuck in hear is a silly myth that I heard a lot while feeding my boys. NO your milk does NOT get sour or go bad once your period returns. This is rubbish. If someone tells you that, Laugh. It is also does not loose its goodness. You might notice a few days before your peroid that your milk will drop a little. That is normal and will return to normal as soon as you start your cycle again.

BOTTLEFEEDING
If you bottle feed your period will return a lot faster. 80% of mothers periods return within 10 weeks after the birth if they do not breast feed.

HORMONES
Everyones hormone levels are different and this does effect how long it will take to menstruate.

One thing to remember, as soon as you get that first period remember you are now fertile. Also sometimes you can get a peroid without ovulating. Some mums will ovulate then get a period. This is how some people get caught out with surprise pregnancy. Always assume you are fertile and don't rely on the breastfeeding contraceptive method.

took me 3 years
I breastfed mine for 2 and a half years, but my periods did not return for 6 months after weaning.  When they did return they were light and very irregular and never went back to normal.  Exclusive breastfeeding can be a contraceptive for most women but like everything else it's not 100% reliable.  A lady from our ABA group came along with a 1 month old, a 12 month old, and a 23 month old and when the group was told that breastfeeding exlusively and on demand is a reliable contraceptive for the first 6 months if the baby is still feeding regularly.  This woman just laughed, her children were all just 11 months apart, she fell pregnant with one when the last one was only 2 months old.  She exclusively breastfed all of her til they were on solids between 5 and 8 months, and they were deman fed til weaning.  Yes she wound up with 3 under 2, all still in nappies, and all breastfeeding!  Nothing is foolproof.

Excellent Advice
I bottle fed my boys but alot of my friends who breastfed always worried about when their period would go back to normal. It's funny as it's something we don't really want but when we do get it, it's kind of a relief..... Women lol!!

after having ryan my periods hadnt came back for more then 3 months(i was breast feeding) thought i would mention it to th DR he told me that most women would love not to have a period so i just took his word for it and didnt worry about it the last thing on my mind was that i was pregnant i actually got my periods soon after my older children were born, but i didnt breast feed for as long iether......in the end i actually thought i had a tumor or something i had changed DRs by then my new DR had a feel of my stomach and asked me to do a urine sample i was pregnant the ultra sound showed i was 19 weeks pregnant and because i was sure i wasnt pregnant i never felt any of the signs i would always put them down to something els.......
