Dangerous Foods

bellachell by bellachell Talking Back(January 2007) (rank 77th)

Many parents believe that they keep the most dangerous of things out of their childrens way. I have thought of a few things that parents may not be aware of that could be seriously dangerous or even potentially fatal to your children.

SALT: The salt (sodium) found in normal baby food, formula and most kids meals is relatively harmless to children but if any child consumes large amounts of this or bicarb or even soy sauce could possibly suffer from salt poisoning. This could result in seizures.

BAY LEAVES: As many parents use these in cooking they are generally found in most kitchens. If you do use these be sure to get rid of all leaves and any broken bits before serving as this can be known to cause some damage to the gastrointestinal tract.

NUTMEG: When found in cakes and biscuits etc this product has no ill effects but if your child should consume large amounts they may suffer from hallucinations. Although this has been found to be a side effect it is also extremely rare.

COOKING EXTRACTS: Those that contain alcohol such as vanilla etc pose the threat of poisoning. If your child manages to drink a large amount they may suffer central nervous system damage, seizures, possibly fall into a coma and could potentially die.

Now all these things are worst case scenario's but if you suspect your child may have induced any of these things you should always take them to the ER just in case.

Thank you for informing us!
apparently because the leaves are so sharp if they are not treated with caution they can tear the lining of the gastro tract on there way down.

Food dangers
Excellent advice. Ditto about the salt. Shocking isn't it? the dangers we don't realise. We've got childproof locks on our food pantry now because Nick's favourite toy for a little while was the pretty bottles of vanilla and rose essence. When we realised the dangers we had to act. Also we thought spices like chilli and paprika could be dangrous as well.
