Let them have fun while they eat!

supermomof3 by supermomof3 Walking(January 2007) (rank 500+)
I was very "strict" with my first son while he would eat.  I would make sure if he was eating something messy, then I would feed it to him.  Not anymore.  Let them experiment.  My second is now almost 18 months old.  He will eat anything...with or
without silverware.  We load up his highchair tray with 3 or 4 different items from different food groups with various textures and colors.  He eats almost everything every time.  I feel that kids need to feel that independence, even if they may not recognize that that is what it is.  He learned to eat at a pace that was comfortable with him.  And to this day, he is still usually the last one done eating, but again, he cleans his tray.  He is not as picky as  an eater as our older son.  Now, I won't say that he didn't have spaghetti in his hair tonight at the end of dinner.  But that is what baths are for.  I will do the same thing with my third son.  Kids need to see that being in their highchair or booster seat is fun and experiment with food...even if it is dumping it on their head.

Re: Let them have fun while they eat!

I've recently begun letting my 6-month-old "play" more with her food. We sing silly songs (we meaning me) while she's in her high chair and I usually let her stay in there for 15-20 minutes at a time, or until she's just over it. I think it's an important concept to learn as well. And I also agree that if they learn to associate fun with their highchair/booster seat that it makes meal time much more enjoyable for all involved :)

experimenting

i've always let my child eat with her fingers with half of the food she eats, and she eats the other half with the silver ware. I do agree that it's a good thing with the fingers etc, so they can feel the texture of different things etc. Great way to get them used to different things.

A littel fun with eating
A little bit of mess is nothing is it.....:)

I honestly think that allowing children to eat like this, mess and all, helps their motor skills - co-ordination....

Good article matey!

Great!!

Messy kids are happy kids. I have found my kids will eat a wider variety of food now they are older because i let them play with their food when i started them on real food.

I would put a shower curtain on the floor under the high chair and any mess was easy to clean up.

You know your right...I gave up trying to spoon feed my son. I realized it was more about the experience, not just him eating nice and neatly - lol
