A day at the beach

mcm by mcm Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 5th)
Water and sun safety is very important especially in Australia. 90% of Australians live within an hour of the beach.
But there are some important things we need to remember to take (along with towels and change of clothes),
  • sunscreen 30+
  • UV protective swimmers
  • hats
  • water to keep hydrated
  • energy snacks
I also recommend a swim nappy/diaper for babies. The other day my bub had swimmers on as I was thinking he wouldn't dirty them. Well he did! Luckily we were close to shower facilities and it was fine. Next time i will use a swim nappy.

We love going to the beach. (I was born on the beach actually) We choose the beach over chlorinated swimming pools primarily because my son suffers from severe eczema. The chlorine is said to irritate the skin where as the salt water can be healing. And would you believe it, every time we go, my boy would much prefer to build  sandcastles on the beach. My boy actually went in the water last time we went last week - I was so proud, I was beaming from ear to ear - my boy was water confident. My girl and bub love the water and hubby and I enjoy the cool down on a hot day. It is definitely a family fun day when we get to head to the beach. As babies, we take turns holding them and as they grow we hold their hands so they can walk in the water. I loved watching my big kids play in the water confidently and independantly. But always with close supervision.
They learn so much when we are at the beach. They ask questions about the ocean and get to experience it. And its always fun!

Salt does heal!!

Fantastic advice.  My boys and I love the beach too but sadly we can only swim part of the year due to stingers.  As to salt water healing, it sure does but because we can't swim all year round I had to find another solution.

I discovered the Deodorising Salt Rock and I swear by it.  My oldest boy suffered terribly with Eczema and I tried everything I could find, some eased it and some didn't.  The Salt Rock however, cleared it up within a week, so if you can get your hands on it, it would really benefit your son.  I purchase it at the markets here and it costs between $8 and $15 (depends on the size) and one rock will last for years.  I think I have seen it in chemists, but you may need to ask if it is the same thing.  It certainly looks like it and they sell it as a deodorant stick which is another great use.  It's looks like a white hazy crystal and you just put it under the tap and wipe it over the problem area.  It leaves an invisible shield and is amazingly soothing.  It is also fantastic for Cold Sores, any itchy rash, mosquito bites (or any bites for that matter), Tinea/Athlete's Foot etc.  My other favourite use for it is on any sores, cuts etc as it helps them heal so much faster and stops infection.  I hope that you can find this rock if your interested as it is one of natures miracles.

Thanks again for the great advice.  Regards, Colleen

salt water

I have heard that salt water does heal the wounds. I've done it a few times i've had a really bad cut or scar, and it's healed up very nicely. I dislike the beach soooooo much, but i did this to heal the wounds quicker. My daughter didn't like the beach either.

Such fun!!!
I miss the beach.  This spurs me to get planning to move from here sooner rather than later because i would love for E to know the beach and how it is like to live near one safely and the beauty that comes with it.
Beach safety is so important, and simple to implement.  Thanks for the reminder.
Peace
