Stolen Store Cards

LaRenae by LaRenae Talking Back(January 2007) (rank 40th)

This could affect your child's special day of gift giving and the exchanging of gifts amongst loved ones ... Someone sent the following to my personal email regarding those cute little decorated "credit" cards you can purchase in any dollar amount to give as a "gift certificate". I thought it was worth passing on .... Gosh the crooks sure do get smarter every day ! I would never have thought of this !

 FYI

Well the crooks have found a way to rob you of your gift card balance. If you buy Gift Cards from a display rack that has various store cards
you may become a victim of theft.  Crooks are now jotting down the card numbers in the store and then wait a few days and call to see how much
of a balance THEY have on the card [the dollar amount You bought the card for].  Once they find the card is activated, and then they go online and start shopping. You may want to purchase your card from a customer service person, where they do not have the Gift Cards viewable to the public.   Please share this with all your family and friends...

I checked it out on www.snopes.com and it is true.  I like to check these things out because I really like web site.  I left the address above, but for some reason I cant get my addresses to light up blue so you can just click on it, I don't know why.  So just copy and paste the address and you can read more about this advice.

I think maybe if on your addresses you leave off the "http://" and the other stuff after the .com part ...that might work ...

www.snopes.com

see, mine turned blue ! Not sure where my link will take you, but it will probably get you there. Then you can tell people where to click once they get there ... I know when I search for sites and put in all the extras in my search on my computer I get nothing. Computer seems to like putting in all the extras on its own ... Also, copy and paste works sometimes too.

Good advice for here or there...
This is excellent advice, I never even thought about it, though it is so obvious and so easy when you mention it.  The stores should only have display cards on the counter and like you say, pass the real deal out once purchased - just like CD stores do.

BTW - I reckon it is fine to post it here.

card scam

I did not find another place to post this advice before I did it, but since I did it another member mentioned it should go in "the junk pile" category and not under "advice" which is for parenting advice. At the time I posted I thought it best to put it here because I thought it would affect gift giving ... which affects our childrens' special times ... so, sorry if it is in the incorrect spot ... not sure how to move it if I need to .... Thanks for being polite !
