Kids and Cameras

tracey by tracey Young Parent(June 2006) (rank 13th)
I believe that encouraging our children to express themselves artistically is a creative and fun part of parenting. Being a photographer, I find that a camera is an easy and accessible tool to share with them. Both my girls are comfortable and confident shooting pictures and some of the images
they capture are awesome. The beauty of digital cameras is you don’t have to pay for prints unless you want them so those that aren’t print-worthy can just be deleted. If your kids show an interest in shooting pictures, I encourage you to let them have a go.   If you’re going to allow your child to use your camera be sure to put the neck or wrist strap on them. Request that young children, who are more prone to dropping the camera, stand over the carpet or grass. Show them what to push and also tell them what’s off-limits. Even my youngest (2 years) knows that if she starts pushing the “no”buttons, her turn is over.   As they begin to shoot more and more collect their images and put them in a book or photo album. This is a sure way to show them how valuable their vision is. It’s very empowering for a child to see work they‘ve created. Who knows, you may be nurturing your very own Ansel Adams.

Record of achievement
I consider having a record of achievement that follows through what we do over time with each craft is priceless to their self-confidence and also shows the story of how they learnt.
Great idea  Tracey

Kids and cameras
We would give our oldest the camera from about the age of 2 to take photos and it was so much fun to watch, sure in the beginning there were lots of the floor or a blured nose etc. but over time we taught him to try and see mummy or daddy through the hole and we found that he started to take great pics. Now we do the same with our youngest and it's just priceless and it gives them confidence as well to see the things that they take pics of.

I love this idea!
We were just talking about this yesterday.  Ethan is too small to hold my heavy camera but he LOVES to take pictures.  We are even contemplating getting that Fisher Price camera for him (or having his grandparents get it for him).

Before we had a digital...
Before we got the digital camera when we were going places like Camping for example.. We would get Camille a disposable camera.. It is amazing what they find so interesting.. And yes some shots are awsome....   This really is a fantastic Idea...

Before we had a digital...
Ethan found a disposable camera under the couch yesterday (don't ask).  We couldn't pry it from his hands.  I think it's a great idea too.

Worked for us
Digital camera is really great.  We let our kids (above 3 years old) to use our second digital camera. They love capturing lots of scene (silly, good, beauty, strange, you name it). We just upload to computer and whallaa there you go, then either we print them or burn them on dvd and send them to special people.

Totally Agree
My brother actually told us of a party he went to where the 2 year old was walking around with a digital camera taking shots and getting the instant-gratification of seeing it on the viewer. So at one function we let our kids take the camera and see what they took!

I think it's interesting to see the shots because it will be from THEIR perspective (a little lower than ours) and to see what interests them enough to take a picture of!

Heck, our daughter got one of the nicest shots of her younger brother!

Along the same line, we have an art center where they can at any time take paper, pencils, paints, pastels, markers, crayons, glue, sprinkles and what have you and do any artwork. Just like with the camera I think it's great for them to have open access to expressing themselves and try things out.

Kids and Cameras

My little girl is fascinated by the camera, and if we take any photos of her we need to show her them instantly! Now that digital cameras are coming down in price so much, I think we will upgrade soon. I might pass her our current one or by her the cheapest possible point-and-shoot and save the more complicated one for when she is a little older. I fondly remember my first camera and I agree that now digital is around, its a much better idea to be able to print the odd photo rather than need to develop a whole roll. This article has got me planning!

Great idea.

This is another great idea and a great tool to encourage creativity. By the time my son is old enough to take pictures, I am sure I'll have a new digital camera so I can hand him the one I have now. Excellent advice. Thanks!

Yep!
I agree wholeheartedly.  Seeing the world from a different perspective is what photograhy is all about.  How can you get much different than being three feet off the ground and full of that wonder and curiosity.  While we don't let Molly (18mo) carry our Canon 1D-MKII-Ns (roughly $4000 apiece) around yet, neither do we keep them locked away from her.  She's usually more interested in the foam padding of the Pelican case, though.

Eventually I'm sure our 20d 'backup and snapshot' camera will become hers in a couple years.  She loves going through the house and pointing to all our photos and naming off the people or objects in them.

Re: Yep!

Oh, I'm a little leary of giving up my SLR Canon as well but they've done well with it. At 18 months however...hmmmm...maybe not quite yet. : ) I think even I'd be afraid to use a $4000 camera.  My dig p&s does the trick for my little shutterbugs. Some of my favorite pix of me are those they have taken!
